Joystick-control of a SW looper or loop station

Hallo maxers, have any of you ever encountered or used an arcade joystick (and buttons) to control a loop station? A physically disabled musician friend has asked me to build her one, and I'm just looking for inspiration. My plans are big but I'll probably start small. She could use it to: set a tempo; input a simple drum pattern; loop and overdub; add bass/pad sounds; mute/solo each loop; maybe get glitchy.
I could certainly start building this immediately but just looking for inspiration atm

Any general comments on joystick hacking and maxmsp?

Joysticks are ok to use with max. I have used several over yeras, including arduino based ones. It does not matter really what one takes - Joystick as hid device, arduino over serial, midi controller ... Hid being better than midi as it never let me down, vs midi which sometimes gets problems on high cpu loads.
But - there are some joysticks that auto - center the range for axis potis. One has to deactivate that if axis should be used as sliders in Max. I would personally prefer arduino - serial solution. It is most flexible.

I think I'll prototype using Arduino and serial/USB to Max, then try the Bela/pd route
