Does anyone have any experience, and helpful hints, with communicating with a Mindstorms NXT brick via [serial]?

Specifically, what bytes to send to the brick, proper format, etc.

I thought using LegoOSC would be an easy route (and it should have been) but I am unable to get the .jar to run.
