A few tutorials involve "test tones" but when i try these, they do not work.

The tutorials say to select "CoreAudio" drive as my driver, but when I can only select either "Live" or "None"

Does this mean that I can only use audio routed through Live?

I am using Max 4 Live so I think this is the issue, but I just wanted to be sure.

If this is the case, is there any way to use test tones that are not from live?

Yes it is. You can't launch max alone with a M4L license.

Do you have any idea why my midi drivers will not show up in Max either?

When I click on the midiin or midiout or any of the mid objects, I do not see any midi inputs or outputs at all (no dialogue box shows up at all, so I can not send or receive midi messages).
