Looking for European Universities
Hi everyone,
I'am an Italian Bachelor Student of Electronic Music and New Technologies and this is my first post.
At the Conservatorium I study:
- Sound Synthesis
- Sound Design
- Live Electronics
- Interactive Composition
…and so on.
My main interests are in the field of the audio/visual-video .
I'd like to know which European Universities offers good programs in this field of study.
For visual-video i refer to:
Expanded cinema

Visual music http://www.centerforvisualmusic.org/
Video art http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Video_art
Experimental film http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Experimental_film
Surfing the net I saw an interesting university
http://imca.concordia.ca/home.html
but it is too far and expensive.
I have a basic knowledge about photography and video editing but i
want to expand my knowledge, especially in computer graphics.
I've seen a couple of beautiful performances and
i was enchanted by theim:
Obviously I can work with max/MSP/Jitter.
If someone have some suggestions please let me know.
Thanks
you could try here;
Hi Razzkazz
thanks
There's two studies in the Netherlands, one directed towards electronic music, the other more toward visual arts and new media. They're part of the same academy. Both have a masters degree as well.

and obviously the lovely North of England has Huddersfield, with a strong media department and a very strong electronic music department as well.
We do have masters and Ph.D. students doing exactly what you are doing either under me or Monty Adkins, or with Derek Hales from the Digital Design department as co-supervisor...
enough of publicity for now ;-) check www.hud.ac.uk, or for our staff research centre, www.cerenem.org

Another plug for Huddersfield University. Great facilities, great lecturers, not at all grey, wet and rainy in Huddersfield.
thanks a lot to everybody for these informations
jvkr, you forget one in the Netherlands:
HKU Faculty of Art, Media and Technology
I studied Composition Electronic Music there,
but there are other composition/performance studies,
just google it.
The difference between this school and sonology in short:
students are much more free on HKU, on sonology you have
to like the arrogant taste of the teachers otherwise it's not
a nice place to be. It's hard to develop there I think. They are
pretty much against everything: rythem, melody, maybe even some
kind of patterns or pitch...Still there's coming good things from it, so if you are really into abstract electronics then it's the place to be. Still, you can do this on HKU as well, but much more...
(I also did 1 year composition on conservatory of The Hague which is the same building as sonology)
Adding up to the Dutch community ventilating their school preferences:

if your perspective is beyond max into SC, there is a really good teacher @ Amsterdam conservatory:

Amsterdam is a really nice city with lots of artistic activity. That might be an important issue to consider if you want to move to the Netherlands(yes, yes, Utrecht is also really cool).
One small comment: either i may agree or not on the comment about Sonology, they do have a really high technical level. Indeed, the taste is peculiar but you can really learn a good amount of tools including extending max+sc. ArtScience, the sister degree of the Art Academy is a good place to have a more artistic input.
If you like dutch with french accent or the other way around(it sound lovely) maybe you can try this:

Belgium really has an interesting cinematic scene with VJ coming all the time and artists working on Live Cinema and some other cinematic hybrids.
Another good option might be Germany:
Köln:

Berlin(yeah!):

Take a look into Karlsruhe, they have(in my humble opinion) the best media Lab in Europe: ZKM. So lot of media art(however, the city is quite small).
However, you must speak german :-(
hope it helps
