Still by far the Softwar with most Bugs I've ever seen.

Genexport decides to stop working for houres, in erlier version it was at least possible to copy the code start a new project and esport from there, even this doesen't work anymore.
Saving projects crashes Max and sometimes destroys the whole file, so it can't be opend anymore.
Max crashes regularly, if it runs 1 hour thats a big reason to celebrate.
From time to time Max decides to switch connections. ( one block is connected to input1 one of a different block, a second block is connected to input2, but after saving max decides it prefers it the other way round)
...

while we all know that there are many bugs in max, eventually too many, i somehow tend to not believe your above socalled experience with using max.

i have seen scrambled connections once in 21 years and when my max chrashes then usually because of a hardware error, a background process, or a lack of free RAM.

[gen] is relatively new, and issues with saving this stuff exist, but then make safety copies of your work for gods sake. :)

HI, the most recent Windows 10 Security update added back a panel that enables installation of Max8.x without needing Norton installed. Go to Windows menu->Settings->Windows Security->Apps & Browser Control->Check apps and files, and turn to WARN or OFF. This option used to be in Windows Defender, and until more recent Windows 10 updates was not accessible in the control panel and required registry changes.

@dirtyduck That's not been my experience at all. It doesn't seem to be happening to other people in this forum or on the Facebook MAX user group. Have you reported the issues you claim to experience to support? You should do if its a serious issue.

Also, sometime between 8.0.8 and 8.1.11, the bug with font size not scaling with the display scaling in the chooser object was fixed. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

So it's hard to belive I'm the only person getting those, however it my guess is that some bug in gen. I didn't had that many problems when I was using standard Max, it just started when I was making projects exclusively in gen (to use the codexport). But if stuff happens like the codeexport stops working after adding a new object and the solution to get it back working is deleting that object and after this undo the deletion, then I'm 99% sure it wasn't a usererror. Another example from yesterday would be I was writing a line in a codebox "detune = in3;" and got an error "detune is not declareted", correct me if I'm wrong but isn't that exact line a declaration? Deleting that line and rewriting it solved the problem. These are just some examples why I can say with 99% guaranty it's not my error but a bug. I really like the idea of Max and Gen and I would really love to support it, but as long use more time finding the point which I have to delete and redo so gen works as expected, I can not do that. And got me to the point that I just finish the projects I'm working on and after that, will go back to pure data and for more complex projects JUCE and C++.

And yes I sent E-Mails to the support, however I stoped that, I don't have the time to send an e-Mail everyday and creating an example patch which recreates the error.

Unable to create JVM is the error message when trying to run java patch in max/mso 11. Is this related to the new release?

This update completely broke VSTs. The DSP in any loaded VST is results in completely distorted audio.
Luckily I had an older install of Max 8.0.3 to roll back too, fixed the problem.

I agree with D1RTY DUCK

His experience is exactly mine. I'm lucky to go an hour without max crashing. i9900k, 2080ti, 64GB of ram. Not a slow computer to run Max on....

I should be slaying whatever this software tries to throw. And yet ill get something as basic as... idk... a blank patch crashing? Not even joking. I mainly prototype Gen projects for audio stuff. And jesus it's terrible. I've done the whole reinstall thing a few times. Deleted hidden appdata stuff etc. It's like the same shit with why I quit Ableton. Shaky and poor performance under load.

Meanwhile I can simultaneously flip through a 100 track bitwig project, C4D project, After Effects, and Premier Pro and everything is fine. I don't get wtf is going on with this... I've sent a fine email to support (not Karen-esque or anything TWICE and received no response. And it's been like 4-5 months at this point.)

To the person who doubts this kind of performance ROMAN THILENIUS , I'd say I'm too busy to go through providing proof, but tbh, Max crashes so often, all I have to do is screen record on some normal work and I'll probably have 3-4 crashes recorded by the end of the night. Could just be one. Might be 8. But I have 100% never used Max in 2020 or 2021 without a project crashing. And all the while it's slow af.

so on one hand we have users which already chrash when running empty patcher windows but then "dont have the time" to file a proper bug report.

on the other hand we have a support desk which does not answer anyway and a forum where i had to write this three times because of a bug.

i actually think that the reason for the described experience is releated to a certain hardware configuration or something like that.

I told you in my comment that I had contacted support 2 times about this issue and never heard back. I actually wrote how many times I contacted support in all caps. Making a video was only for you since you seemed to doubt people’s experience with the software, which is rude and strange cause like, why would they come here to lie about max shitting out?

not sure what hardware configuration it would be when I run the the most demanding programs computers run outside of being an actual scientist fine but for some reason a wildly popular and compatible intel cpu, nvidia gpu, corsair memory, and asus motherboard are just killing it? I mean yeah I guess maybe its related to hardware, but only because max is essentially life support abandonware for unstable ableton extensions and BCS majors to get interested in learning to program audio in not max.

Ryan, my own experience with support is that it can tak a long time Cycling74's usually writes back in a day or two, but it can taka long time to fix the bug. Max is a very complicated piece of software. You just need to make sure the bug is filed and it will get fixed eventually.

A couple things to help quiet down the ruffled feathers

when I was at University of Michigan (been about 10 years now) Pierre Boulez came and gave a talk. (You know, the founder of IRCAM).

he had a lot of cool stuff to say, but I’ll never ever forget these exact word “what we are doing now with electronic music in its infancy“.

point is, we are in the very baby beginning of a technological revolution. and the ones who succeed are the ones who find ways to make it work, with what they have, and take steps forward with each new creation.

yes, of course it’s going to crash if you try to do too much!

right now, today, I just finished day 10 of a 13 day live performance/installation and have recorded over 40 hours of it. all real time audio processing. 8 channel surround. I cut my tracks from 24 down to 16 so my sputtering laptop could handle it. not one single crash. the only problems so far are my absolutely dumb forgetfulness mistakes.

max 8111
2017 MacBook Pro

anyway. 2 cents added.

Hi Ryan, This is Ashley with Cycling '74 Support. We received two emails from you regarding Max performance issues: one on March 21st, which we responded to on March 22nd, and one on April 9th, which we responded to the same day. Perhaps our responses were filtered to your Spam folder, or blocked in some other way? Please make sure that your email account is allowing messages from support@cycling74.zendesk.com to come through. I will send our responses to you again, via my personal address, to ensure that you receive them.

Hi Ashley. I don't have any emails from you or from support in my spam or my regular inbox. I don't have these emails blocked either. I've added the zendesk support to my contacts in case.

I am getting all the webmaster.cycling74 emails in my inbox. It's icloud/apple so generally it's alright, but unfortunately there's very limited options to adjust any email settings. But also you never usually have to. I've set any emails from support@cycling74.zendesk.com to be automatically forwarded to another email, but as far as my icloud account is concerned, I've never received anything from that email address.

I'll just try emailing support from a new email address...

Ashley's icon

Hi Ryan, The email I sent to you from my personal account bounced back. I used the email address that was on the support ticket you submitted back in March, which is not an icloud account. It seems like the email account that you originally messaged us from is no longer working. Could you please send another email from your icloud account to support@cycling74.com?

Yes then that's my mistake. I had to change some server settings on my business website.

For now Max seems fine. I didn't want to think about it anymore but then I noticed the specific admin account on my PC ran much better than my user account (which was still technically an admin). So I reinstalled my operating system again with only an admin account nothing else. So that seems to have helped for now.

So yeah, sorry I was aggressive on the forums. hopefully this just stays this way and everything will be fine from now on.

Glad to hear it's working now, Ryan!
