Max bug? (patch window does not appear)

Hello all,

I can't believe this isn't already on a list somewhere (i've searched!) or, it's just something about my set-up but...

When using a dual monitor set-up (MacBook Pro with 17" LCD) if i edit and save a patch with the window on the external monitor, then disconnect it and open the file again the window doesn't appear on the remaining (built in) screen.

If you it as save as text, then edit the vpatcher agruments to have positive values the patch will open and it can be re-saved, but this sounds like a fairly simple bug (unless it's just me) so next time someone's in that bit of code maybe they can have a look (please).

No biggie as i have a work-around - keep up the good work!

the solution is more simple: select the name of the window (in the
window menu) while pressing on alt key.

If you search carefully in the forum again (which is not always easy),
you should find the solution:

choose the disappeared patch from the "Window" menu while holding down
the option key (sorry, I think people on this list except Peter prefer
to call it the "alt" key).

It's not a Max bug, but an OS stupidity. It happens to everybody all the
time, for any kind of softwares. I'm working again on an old machine
which was set for 2 monitors. Now that there's only one, i got a few
apps not showing because the last time they were opened, it was on the
other monitor...

Actually it was a deliberate design decision made in Max many years
ago, running contrary to standard and accepted application behavior
in Macland (at a time when Max was a Mac-only application). That
decision has been hotly debated hundreds of times. Many people
consider the decision misguided, a few people seem to consider it a
"good idea". For better or worse, the "good idea" crowd won over
Cycling '74 before Cycling '74 was even founded.

Googling on

    offscreen window site:cycling74.com

Turns up over 201 articles dealing with the problem. It is not new.
It has been discussed. Now we have 202 articles.

Ah, i do now remember the option key thing - i think i knew that many years ago - old age wins again.

Must make a note somewhere...

Thanks for the input
