Max Computer Music Workshop [Online]

At the 10th annual Charlotte New Music Festival

For creative technologists + musicians + composers.
Signal processing as a medium for musical expression.

The Max Computer Music Workshop (MCMW), led by Charles Nichols and Christopher Dobrian (author of "Max Cookbook"), is an intermediate to advanced one- to two-week immersive workshop, focused on programming and composing computer music in the Max visual programming environment. Participants will learn techniques for programming interactive computer music, culminating in a public recorded performance of works created during the workshop, performed by the composers and guest musicians.

Session A: "Max Programming Fundamentals"
2 weekends, (beginner/intermediate) July 16–18, 24–25

Session A may be taken as a standalone crash-immersion weekend course, getting you adept with basic and intermediate interactive Max programming techniques. Most days will incorporate the creation of small practical études.
12:00-3:00 pm ET: Interactive Max Presentations
4:00-7:00pm: Max labs

Session B: "Computer Music Programming and Composition”
(intermediate-advanced) July 26–31

Session B is a weekday continuation of Session A. You will further develop your Max programming skills and create a piece for performance in the Max Computer Music Concert on the last day of the workshop.
11:00-2:00pm ET: Interactive Max Presentations
2:00-4:00pm: CNMF guest presentations
4:00-7:00pm: Max labs

Dobrian and Nichols will present a range of computer music topics, including:

  • Digital Audio — input/output, synthesis, recording, looping, processing, and spatialization

  • MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) data for musical control

  • OSC (Open Sound Control) data for communication between devices

  • Event timing, ordering, and sequencing

  • Program structure and user interface design

  • Composition of algorithmic interactive computer music.
