Max for Live and Max 7 compatibility

Will it be possible for max for live license user to use my max for live device created in max 7?

Hi, if you are using any Max 7 specific content then they will need to update. You can still develop projects in 7 that they can use, along as you stick to content available in Max 6.

Thanks for response.
So the problem could be only in not available in max 6 objects.

Yes, other than that everything will be fine. New objects introduced for Max 7 will not be available in Max 6 (and therefore M4L). M4L users do have the option of subscribing to Max 7 is they don't want to pay the cross-grade price though, but obviously it's not something you can rely on.

I just found this in the FAQ:

Ableton Live 9: Max 7 is compatible with Live 9 , and you can use Max 7 as the Max for Live editor if you are a Max 7 license holder. (Learn about crossgrading to a Max 7 license.) Full support for Max 7 as the Max for Live editor will be included in a future Live release.

(my emphasis)

Just to avoid unnecessary speculation and head-breaking, let me unpack that sentence: "full support" in this case means "A paid upgrade to a version of Ableton Live which supports Max 7 as the M4L editor without requiring a Max 7 license". If you have a Max 7 license, you're good to go with 9.1.6+.

yeah, I'm kind of assuming this is going to be part of Live 10 ?! so you will have to pay to upgrade to Live 10, as normal.
great to hear its on its way

can you tell us, is this just an editor upgrade or, will it include the new M4L devices and other M7 features.
(seemed a bit odd to be surprising to its phrased as editor, rather than just saying there will be M4L 7)

Questions regarding Ableton products are best directed to Ableton, I don't have any information about their release schedule or features. I just wanted to assure you (and anyone else reading this thread) that you are getting a full-featured M4L experience with a licensed Max 7 and Ableton Live 9.1.6+, since there seems to be some uncertainty, incredulity or skepticism on the subject. :-)

Hi, confused by this statement "...Max 7 can both host and author Max for Live MIDI and audio devices without Live..." on the Max 7 introduction page, I wonder: is it possible to produce/run M4L devices in Max 7 without any involvement with Ableton Live (i.e. without having installed Ableton L)?

Actually there seems a lot of confusion, for example this statement on the Ableton website:

"Max for Live is based on Max 6 - the latest version of Max."

Max 7 can load and run Max for Live devices directly in patchers - they behave rather like VST or AU plug-ins (but with their full user interface directly in the patcher).

So in other words, the above mentioned statement "…Max 7 can both host and author Max for Live MIDI and audio devices without Live…" is just wrong?

Broc, what ?

Well, "Max 7 can author M4L devices" sounds to me like "Max 7 can be used to create M4L devices" which seems not to be true.

Hmm... maybe. I don't know whether Max 7 can be persuaded to create .amxd files on its own without being invoked within Live.

...just tried it,its working! a bit like with poly~s,choose the patcher to load in the .amxd's inspector and so on.
I didnt check the details, though, for example can U load your max7-done-amxd into LIVE?
..besides I've been messing around a bit lately with trying to load lots of .amxds into max7,
with good results.no problem with LIVE's convolution reverb for example which is a rather big bird.
also, parameter storage / retrieval works quite nice via 'snapshot'.
...sooo...in fact we have maxforlive without LIVE now, funny, huh?
