Max hangs when opening documentation...
New Max user here. I'm slowing learning my way around and so far Max looks awesome. Problem is Max keeps hanging when opening the documentation. The usual sequence is:
1) Start Max
2) Create new empty patch
3) Add an object, press SHIFT+CTRL+R to open the objects reference documentation.
4) The new documentation window will open but no content will show in the window. Max will hang as this point. It's not possible to save the patch. ("Documentation: c74_docs.html" will show in the new window title bar. Image attached.)
Max doesn't always hang. When the documentation window opens successfully Max will almost always continue to work bug free for the remainder of the session. Restarting windows sometimes helps, sometimes doesn't. I'm continuing to look for patterns that might reliably trigger the hang bug haven't noticed anything yet. The only thing is if Max does crash, it usually happens on the very first attempt to open the documentation.
In all other aspects Max is working bug free so far.
I contacted support. They suggested:
1) Reinstall Max. (Tried that. No difference.)
2) Create New windows user. Test Max in with that account. (Tried that, Max worked in my limited testing. But given this fault is intermittent it's hard to know if migrating to the new user account is a good long term solution.)
3) Reinstall the Windows. It might be a low-level fault from out of date drivers or something else support says. (I haven't tried because it seems a bit drastic.)
Has anyone else in the Max community run into the same issue?
I've had this same problem during the couple of years I have been using Max on Windows 7 (on a pretty low spec laptop). Does this happen every time you open up a Reference file? For me this only occurs the first time I open one. For the rest of the session they open pretty quickly. I'm half wondering if in the first instance all of the Reference files are loading in the background. Does anyone here know if this is indeed the case?
I'm on Windows 7 as well. Max doesn't always hang in my case. If Max does hang, it always hangs on the first attempt opening a reference document.
In my Windows 7 machine, loading any reference file takes a looong time, compared to my Mac.
What's the email address for support? Think I will forward this thread on to them.
It happens to me very often with Windows 7. So far, the only thing to do is to try and re-try, restarting is not always useful and it can work again after six or seven shots.
@Domkirke: Have you tried creating a new windows user account and using Max from that account? In my case Max can usually open the documentation under the new user account but not my main user account. I don't think it's a proper solution as Max will still hangs opening documentation in some circumstances.
Externals can often be the culprit. I just noted this problem after installing "note~" for testing. Here is the
error message (check the Max window):
Warning: you have multiple files in your search path with the name c74_docs.html
using this file: Macintosh HD:/Users//MAXMSP/Externals/note~/docs/dynamic/c74_docs.html
Wrong c74_docs.html !
I store my externals in a DropBox location. After gathering a bunch of externals, things can easily
get messy and naming conflicts do occur. For the above, I removed the note~/... folder to another area that
is not searched by Max, restarted, and the documentation is easily found.
I have the same problem here. Nothing really solves it (did not re-install win7). It seems random and it is very annoying! I just stopped using the documentation and use the online one!!!
Maybe it is a bug in the java scripts of the htmls?
Anyone from cycling has any info on that?
Problem solved in Max 7. Consulting the HTML reference is now very quick!
Thanks, great to hear!
same here. win7 x64 - All help file links just hang. Very hit and miss. Might open once in 10 attempts!
any help appreciated.
@Pedro: Thanks for the update. Good to hear the documentation works better in Max7.
ok figured this out - exclude max in anti-virus for anybody with similar problem.
Hello Dear List @C74 crew,
Ok i got the same problem as described here but i'm on OSX.10.5 Max 7.0.6.
Works under a new user but how to say that, i don't want to be a new user!!
So is this kind of bug related to unix authorization stuff... or is there something else under the hood ???
If anyone has idea i would greatly appreciate because as it's the aim of documentation it's really helpful
Thank you
Hubert
