Max/MSP and GUITAR CONTROLLER
Hello All!
I was wondering if anybody has or knows where I can get a patch that will allow me to use a Playstation controller (namely the one supplied with Guitar Hero) to trigger samples within Max/Msp. I have scoured the internet and have come across such similar applications as PSmaX and several others, but all links to these seem to be deffective.
Any information or advice would be gratefully recieved.

Thanks for the reply!
Any chance I could be a beta tester for this patch? Would you be so kind as to send it to me?
sure i can send on to you,
im currently working on site at the takeaway festival at the dana centre
science museum london until friday night but can send you the compiled patch
and max.mxb file a bit later when i get the chance. if your in london come
on over and have a chat. its free from 10 am to 10pm. ask for jon cambeul
from something labs.
It's an os 9 application. parts of the code will run on a pc or mac os x but
not all. however i can send you a folder with a readme indicating what does
what. if you have the classic environment or os9 it should run ok but i will
have to send a couple of extentions that you need to place in your system
folder. anyway ill see what i can do.
cheers
jon

I know a lot of people are working on similar patches and I think it's great.. I'm using the DrumMania, BeatMania and GH controllers to work out a large patch for video and audio ... almost like a real band.
I was wondering what people are doing with the hid data aside from triggering samples?
cheers!

Well, I haven't gotten this far yet, but the whammy bar and tilt sensor seem like a natural way to control synthesizer and FX parameters. The other buttons could be used to switch patcher state, like changing presets, switching samples, or turning FX on/off. These are pretty straightforward mappings, though, I'm sure there's much more creative and innovative ways to map the input.
If you want to see this stuff in action, google for "guitar zeros". It's a band comprised of people playing guitar hero controllers hooked up to Max/MSP. There is a decent interview video on YouTube and they have some interesting stuff on their website including some free Max/MSP patches (although their patches didn't work for me because my controller seems to behave different than the one it was designed for, but they gave me some good ideas). I'm not affiliated with the band, I just discovered this the other day and thought it was interesting.

I actually started work on this before the Guitar Zero group so it really nudges the concept of simultaneous development.. cool stuff though... now if you have checked out the hid data; do you get any analog controls whatsoever? I only get digital buttons and if you're rockin an actual output of 1-256 or such I'd love to know what type of adapters your are using.. i certainly have no problem re-writing all of this if there's more info goin' on...
aside from that, I was looking into modifying the software to play midi notes in chords or arpegios (depending on patch) based on one - 3 button presses and the location of the pick bar...
That's awesome, just another great use for Max. Wondering whether anyone's working on more advanced guitar-based controllers, the one for GH is cool but there's so much more that can be added.
I think with some work a pretty cool interface a la GH could also be created using Max and OpenGL. It wouldn't be as slick because of the graphics processing limitations, but it could be way more flexible...

I've had this problem with another controller - I've accepted it as a mac/pc difference. but I've noticed values differ between pc's too. Why is that?
It works great on macs - you get a simple 0-255 range but pc's are from 0 - (some ridiculus number).
Why?
ps. These guitar hero's sound rad - are they simply USB?
I think that's got a lot to do with the adapters being used as well.. there was a very rudimentary guitar hero sample sequencer youtube video out about a year or so ago I think and using the same adapter was important to get the same hid data...
all the Ratshack adapters (blue and black box) versions as far as the handful I snagged up work the same...
I really want a goldbrick from the days of yore tho...

Yes. The Xbox 360 version is USB - actually it's some other sort of connector plugged into a USB adapter cable. The PlayStation version doesn't come with the USB adapter but you can buy it. I have the Xbox 360 version - you just plug it into your computer and you're good to go.
FYI, GH3 is supposedly coming out this fall and will have new wireless controllers that I believe have some extra buttons. Being wireless, though, you won't be able to just plug it in. But I think you'd be able to use something like this: http://www.xbox.com/en-US/hardware/x/xbox360wirelessgamingreceiver/
That should also allow you to hook up any wireless Xbox 360 peripheral to Max, like the standard console controller. Has anyone tried this? Does it work with OS X?
