midi controlled pitch shift

Hi there all,
I am new to max. I am trying to create a real time pitch shifting effect controlled by a midi keyboard.
I made a couple of patches which I have attached.

One uses pitchshit~ but the latency is pretty bad.

The other uses shifter~

I think pitch shifter works a little faster but I can't seem to remove the initial signal from the patch so its working like a harmonizer at the moment.
