hello all

working on a step sequencer patch, using the built in midi on mac os x. one thing i was wondering was the conversion of midi to audio, i cant seem to get it done. i have looked at [mtof~] and others, plus have looked on the forums, but cant find anything that could help or work. maybe the fact i am looking for it and cant see it in front of me.

This comes up periodically here and on other audio/midi forums. Basically, you can't directly convert MIDI to audio, because MIDI is just a stream of control data, it's not any sort of audio or music. You first need to send the MIDI data to some sort of device that creates sound (keyboard, synth, sound module, etc.) and have that device play the MIDI data. Then you record the audio output from the device that is responding to the MIDI stream.

I hear a lot about soundflower for Mac and "jack" for Windows which can do this---route MIDI or audio around between apps. So you could send the MIDI thru soundflower and your sound card will convert to audio, then use adc~ to re-grab it back into your patch. Haven't tried either but have heard good things...

It would be nice to be able to apply cool MSP effects to your MIDI, that's for sure :)
