monolake-style FM grains

Hi I watched some demo videos by Robert Henke of his Max4Live granulator; he has some FM going on in parts of the video. Inspired, I attempted to add similar to my own granny-later, by simply modulating the grain-pitch value with a [cycle~ 50]. It is 'true' grain-pitch FM (without the carrier/modulator ratio) as I've implemented it, but it certainly sounds nothing like Monolake; it's just a bit samey. No matter what my source file, grain pitch etc I get the same timbres.
As I don't have Max4Live, can someone suggest what algorithm Henke is or might be using; for example is he 'self-modulating' the output grain stream? Or maybe using a richer modulator oscillator? Or relating the mod freq to the grain pitch (which I'm not)........forgive the rambling, but check out his video, the FM grain timbres are LUSCIOUS
    Thanks Brendan

The above post is a Masterclass in vagueness.
I'll post a more specific example patch in the morning....
Sorry for the noise, this is not a bump
