Multi-touch input -> MaxMSP in 2018? - s2m.wacomtouch / fingerpinger / sensel morph
Hi!
I am searching for good ways to get multitouch data into Max. Here is what I found so far:
Wacom Tablet + 's2m.wacomtouch' is a good way to get multi-touch data into max, even though the objects haven't been updated since 2014 and are quite buggy (especially in combination with constantly changing wacom drivers). Wacom has a wide selection of trackpads with good pricing.
'fingerpinger' is great for the internal OSX trackpad and the Magic Trackpad. Both of these trackpads are rather small though.
The Sensel Morph plus Max library looks promising, but besides the price, it does not seem to be possible to have multiple trackpads connected at the same time. Has anybody made experiences with that?
Are there any other solid Hardware options out there, with reliable integration into Max? Has anyone gone down the Arduino path?
I'm happy about any input here.
many thanks
frederic
I don't have experience with the Sensel Morph and whether the external supports multiple inputs, but one pro is that the external is developed by C74, which would hopefully indicate that it would be supported more consistently than 3rd party externals.
Have you seen the size of the latest Macbook Pros trackpads? I have a 2012 model and was surprised by how large they are (perhaps there are different sizes for 13 and 15 inch models).
I love fingerpinger and have projects that I would like to continue with - however it currently will not always work when running in Ableton, which is a deal breaker for my usage. The last update was in 2015 and the developer did not respond when I asked whether this was still in development a few months ago. However the source is available if someone wants to continue with development. I am interested in the new pressure sensitivity in the newer trackpads - although this is not yet implemented in fingerpinger.
Hi Zach, thanks for the reply.
good point about C74s involvement in sensel morph. definitely one to keep an eye on, esp once multiple devices are reliably supported. if only it wasnt 330$ per unit....
I feel like a multi touch area of at least 152 x 95 mm (6.0 x 3.7 in) is required for comfortable handling, but maybe that's just me. Apple doesn't have that size. Wacoms have been very good in this respect, and s2m works like a charm with just one unit attached, also inside of ableton. That might be a good alternative for fingerpinger.
would also curious to see what kind of projects you are doing with multitouch. I feel like there isn't that much out there.
oh, just saw the size of the Magic Trackpad 2.. pretty good; buggy in ableton - not so good :-/
Hi Frederic - Here's an example I cooked up using Max and the Morph for Sensel: https://sensel.com/blogs/news/maxing-the-morph
We do run specials not uncommonly - feel free to email me peter at sensel dot com with any questions!
mb too obvious, but did you try mira ? i do like it a lot with an ipad, andnow that there is miraweb it's free to use on any tactile tablet that as a web browser
thanks for the input!
@vichug: didn't know about miraweb, that opens up a lot of options in terms of price and size. will definitely check it out!
@peter: nice application; obviously the morphs sensors are top notch... is it currently possible to connect several at the same time?
