Multiple-channel output (or preview-audio) (or just like two turntables)

Hello peoples! (of the not so free world)

I have a question and probably a bad description for my post but i had no other idea what to call it so,
I'm having my first! gig in two weeks and i will only be using max/msp to produce the music live.
Is it possible to "preview" the sound (on your headphones) before you mix it in? (Like a dj mixing in two records.)
For example i have one patch with a sample running and i want to "mix" in a synth from another patch, would it be possible to "preview" the synth before launching? Enabling you to tweak parameters and adjust/smoothen so it will sound nice! (before sending it out to the visitors :)

Thanks for any possible help!

If your audio interface supports more than 2 outputs and will let you route 2 of them to headphones (most do) then you could just use a [dac~ 1 2 ] as your main outputs and a [dac~ 3 4] as your headphone outs. If your using your inbuilt computer soundcard out, then no. Preview sounds on outputs 3 & 4 and when when you want to, just turn up its gain into outputs 1 & 2. This is exactly what you would be doing on a mixer/dj mixer btw.

Thanks for your reply,

unfortunately i have the built-in soundcard, yes (this calls for an upgrade soon :) on top of that i won't be playing on my own setup. I'm exporting everything to a laptop available at the show. Guess i'll have to go improvise.

(Would the opening/closing of different patches in an audio-interface with 4 outputs result in interruption of the dsp-chain/clicks or are they truly seperate?)

hmmm... i got an idea, if they have a mixer present why not have one patch ouput the 1st channel (left input of ezdac) and another the 2nd channel (right input of ezdac) and do some magic with the wires to mixer so the mixer-input would have two channels which are playing the same sound but one is panned to the left and the other is panned to the right resulting in two seperate (mono)-channels. This is possible right?

If you have two channels playing the same thing the result will be in mono, it could work but you won't hear any panning. I don't know if you would hear clicks when opening new patches or not, might be best to try it out just in case!
