Need a bit of help with Modalys and Max

Hey, I've been recently getting into Modalys which is created by IRCAM and it really seems quite fantastic. However, the documentation leaves quite a bit to be desired when it comes to explaning the implementation in Max. I'm interested in testing out certain aspects of a piano-like structure and in the manual there's mention of piano_soundboard.dat (now .txt in the installation I have). Seems like the only way to use this file would be read from file but how should it then be used?

Has anyone on here used Modalys and would like to share experience about it. It seems VERY unclear to me if I should do more within max with their objects or just directly code and import into max.

Thanks a lot guys

Maladie,

I have used Modalys with Max for one (large) project, and intend to use it more. I worked by using their objects in Max exclusively. I learned by reading the documentation and from the Moalys overview/tutorial in the Forum Max Apps. Now they also have help files for their Max objects.

I think it is quite fantastic too.

I've found their documentation to be rather lacking in the Max department but I guess I'll just have to fool around with it a lot more. Did you happen to use the soundboard function?

Agreed that Modalys is an absolutely fantastic program. I really find that most of the IRCAM stuff is truly incredible. I've been using SPAT for awhile and am incredibly impressed by it. I'm thinking of perhaps getting Omax to use it with Modalys and SPAT.

I'm busy today, but then I don't mind to try and explain a bit how I understand Modalys use in Max, or discuss some questions. I haven't used the soundboard function. I have found the folks on the Modalys list quite helpful.

Edit: Omax, Modalys, and Spat sounds like a lot of fun. :-)

Hey, just : if you're going to explain anything Modalys, please make so publicly :-)

How much should I write in code and not with Max objects to be precise?

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

I'm trying to get the piano soundboard with this code, but can't get it to work at all.

Hi,

I'm quite interested in Modal Synthesis and Modalys in particular, but since it's a lot to learn (and the documentation is really sparse), I'm wondering if it's worth it.

Do you think it's a good idea to start using Modalys in 2024 ?

Are there better alternatives ?

Any good resources to learn ?

Thanks !

Hi,

I’ve used Modalys in a couple more projects since those earlier posts. I think it sounds really good and you can do interesting things with it. It’s powerful and flexible, but that means there’s a lot to learn.

There’s a lot of terminology a a bit of a different concept to learn. Also, kinda like blowing up a filter, some combinations of parameters might mean your instrument sounds horrible or not at all.

There are more examples and help patches now, and some videos. I found it helped to read the manual even though there’s not much Max in it. I learned concepts from the manual and how to use them in Max from the examples.

There’s some physical modeling plugins out there now. Though they won’t have the flexibility of Modalys they should be simpler to use.

…continuing here

And Apple’s Sculpture.

I was happy to use Modalys because I could do things like integrate it with the physics engine in Max, or control it with other data sources.

Hope this helps.

@Vichug, sorry I didn’t get back to you last decade. 😬
