Need an iPhone/iPad app that can receive OSC and flash in time to beats
I have Lemur on my iPad and I just tried the experiment of sending OSC commands to it from Max, one command to turn an LED on, the other to turn it off.
Turns out that the Lemur responds way too slowly for this to actually be useful (I saw delays up to at least 1 second before the LED changed color)
I'm wondering if anyone knows of another app (free or commercial, I need whatever works best) for the iPhone/iPad that can receive OSC commands (or even MIDI messages vi wifi) so as to be able to show the speed at which beats are changing. I need this so that a drummer can see what speed a particular loop is being played to make sure the band stays at the same speed when the loop is not audible.
Thanks,
D
I think there's an inherent network latency in going over wifi, but I haven't noticed anything as drastic as what you're describing using TouchOSC. Though I've not tried going any timing sensitive feedback stuff.
tasks like this work quite well for me with touchOSC (had a piece recently with 2 groups of percussionists and varying tempi; no problems with two flashes on a couple of iphones/pods)
There shouldn't be THAT much latency ---
I have touchOSC but have not really tried using it. I'll check it out.
Thanks,
D
I just tried the experiment with touchOSC and ran into exactly the same kind of delays.
I then switched from using OSC to using MIDI (CoreMIDI over wifi) and it works beautifully.
So it would seem that there is a problem using OSC to send messages to these devices.
I wonder what could possibly be wrong.
