New Macbook Pros : Videocard Performance : 6490 vs 6750
Hi fellas,
I'm looking forward to get a new laptop, Macbook Pro 15", I'm unsure if I should get the version with the 6490 or the one with 6750 graphic card. I'm gonna make some realtime 3D rendering using Jitter, mainly OpenGL and slabs, with a modified patch of superformula, some textures and some shading.
Can some owner of the new MBPs post impressions or maybe some benchmarks using some jitter-help-patch, to get an idea of the realworld performance difference between the two models?
Thing is I don't have so much money to spend, and getting the higher specd model would mean some months without steaks, discodancing and weekends.
So I'd like to be sure it's worth the effort.
Thanks a lot,
all the best,
Gio
For the moment, all I could find is this forum of boys buying 3000$ MBP to play Starcraft and World of Warcraft, and crying because they can't play at ultra settings 1920x1200: ahahah...
Here's a comparison showing a difference of 5% for the two models:

The more I read, the more I think about hackintosh...
They've totally made a bad move choosing these graphic cards,
at least don't call them PRO, call them "Macbook Chic" next time, ok?
Or give an option for built-to-order graphic cards...
Not to hijack the thread but I'm very curious as well about a hackintosh for video. Saw this on create digital motion:
< I just built another mini ITX mac that has more power that any laptop and it only weighs 6 pounds and fits in 6″x6″x6″ case. Oh did I mention it only costs 350 bucks to build.>
Maybe a new 'hackintosh for video' thread is in order...
If I would use the laptop only for 2D VJing, than you're right,
go Windows and get the most bang for buck$.
But running Jitter 3D stuff under Windows was never a nice experience,
and I have already made many Jitter patches on OSX I'm not willing to re-implement for win...
Best advice for the moment: hackintosh mini-itx, as seen on CDM...
I had the same question about GPUs. Spent some time researching and asking around about it. I decided that the better graphics card wasn't worth the price increase of 20% (factoring the cpu and harddrive upgrades are negligible).
The higher end 6750 has around twice the specs of the 6490. So maybe this means it can do twice the FPS for hardcore video games? I've been doing some jit.gl with some complex models and I don't think it's even touching 1% of the gpu or the vram. I'm still learning exactly what type of things in open gl use what parts of the GPU though. Will be doing more comlex things in the near future so if I run into any issues, I'll post it here. But as of right now I'm happy with the 6490 MBP.
