NN
My wife is doing a theatre piece on our old friend
Netochka, and I've been charged with supplying some
visuals (my first post on the Jitter forum - I hope i
haven't blown it by mentioning her name ;-).
I've been Maxing for a few years but only just
started Jittering, so I doubt whether I'll have the
chops to do a great job in the given time scale, so
I'm looking for anything that anyone cares to share
that gives the flavour of her work - in particular,
anything created with nato, would be great.
In fact any info, links, videos, images, music etc.
that anyone cares to share would be hugely
appreciated. Luckily, i still have a few years worth
of old Mcgill list 'mails on an old machine to trawl
through, but I'd really like to see some actual
NN/nato video, if anyone has any to share.
As you would imagine, she's left a suitably obscure
trail; what little there is, even on the Internet
Archive, is curiously devoid of any actual artwork
(other than reams of ASCII art, of course).
I have managed to find a few little nato/maxlets, but
so far, I've not had much success trying to run them -
am I right in thinking that nato (runtime) wont run in
Classic, ie. that I'd have to boot into OS9 ?
My only PPC machine is refusing to boot into OS9 atm,
so my only option is to reformat my laptop, which I'd
rather avoid if i can.
Please contact me off list (roger at
wildfrontear.co.uk) if you have anything to share,
TIA,
Roger

we are busy with a project about nn too.
just started to read the novel from fyodor dostoyevsky ...
some where i have some archives of the +55 list if you want
-mj
My wife is just finishing it!
The project itself is very much in it's infancy at the
moment, but she is a bigger Dostoevsky fan than she is
a technology fan (that's my job :), she was keen to
read the book first to see what inspiration she could
find there.
i would love to see those list 'mails if/when you
find them,
cheers

there are of course 2 versions:
1 - http://www.subtletechnologies.com/2006/symposium/Dan.html
2 - http://www.3via.org/wordpress/?p=36
+ - meta got a nato runtime running under classic with his panaroma
o_O wow we will all be recycled / hTTp://eyescratch.tk
Now here's something I'm interested in!!!
Only video on youtube of Nato 0.55:
Also, goldmine:
All of the messages from integer@www.god-emil.dk are from her.
Highlights:
*She kindly (yet directly) declines an invitation from David Zicarelli to attend a show displaying Max.
*A beautiful ASCII model of the human heart.
*A long speech about the school systems of today and their ability to squash the natural human instinct to be curious and want to learn. (http://music.calarts.edu/~cchaplin/lev/archive/2000-january/msg00015.html)
*A bunch of dead links to old websites (m9ndfuck.com and such)
Phew! Don'tcha just love academe-speak ? I actually
think I NN is easier to follow ...
'a phylotically entwined polymorphic web of covalent
potentialities' indeed! Magic.
Good call getting 'pataphysics' in there though -
think we'll steal that one ;-)
Btw, I did manage to get a bootable OS 9 machine by
cloning an old drive - from what i can see, it a
appears that Nato runtime will sort-of work in
Classic, but works a lot better if you boot into OS9
Many thanks, and keep it coming!
cheers

Thanks for that youtube link, that was freaking GREAT!
What is up with the Netochka resurgence? I've heard a lot of strange
stories lately...
I just picked up the new book that DJ Spooky edited (called Sound
Unbound) because it had some essays by a few decent people in it. In
the second chapter our dear Prof Paul D. Miller spends like two pages
on Netochka as some sort of Post-Modern BS. Get this, I swear I'm
quoting:
"Think of her as an update to Walter Benjamin's 'The Work of Art in
the Age of Mechanical Reproduction'".
"...Nezvanova is part and parcel of the mythology of the online
software scene..."
I throw up in my mouth a little every time I read his stuff. We have a
damned _mythology_ now, evidently. I'm going to write an epic poem on
Studio Vision now.
bt
hello everyone,
Did anybody experienced a max5 crash when using #file on
menubar object?
This is happening on my PB g4 (1.67 1.5GBRam) and only if I add the
#file line script on menubar object (menutitle is working). The crash
occurs when enabling the object.
ciao ciao

Maybe a bit pukey in the limitless now of the 'tubes, but 90's nostalgia is about to rear its head, as it is closing in on 20 years away from "the 90's". Though nostalgia and myth are different species, if you blur your eyes, they can start looking the same. Kinda like reptiles and birds...
Not long ago, in a public place (the airport) I overheard a teen on the cellphone say to her friend "Everyone there was dressed like in the 90's."
GAME ON!
