Noob question: How to hook up MAX to Sampletank and record the output

Hi, I was offered MAX for my birthday and am very excited to try it out.
My dream is to use MAX to input MIDI to my computer sound modules Miroslav and Sampletank and to record the output.
I can't figure out how to get MAX input into these modules within my computer. Is MAX only useful for hooking up to external sound modules?
Is this not possible? Any clues would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks so much.--Alisa

Hi Alisa,

You can do this quite easily in Max and much, much more once you start to get to grips with it (which can take a while but do bear with it!)

I would strongly suggest working through the help files from the start and get a good grip of the basics, but if you check out the help files for Max objects 'notein' makenote' 'note out' they should get you going on what you want to do.

To transmit MIDI to you DAW or VST/AU double click the 'noteout' object when the patch is locked and select 'from max 1' (this will transmit MIDI from Max) and then in you D.A.W or VST/AU make sure it is set to recieve MIDI from 'Max 1' and it should play whatever MIDI data Max spits out.

If it helps I can make you a patch later (when i get back from work :P ) so you can have a look at the correct set up.

Regards,

Oli.

Hi Oli, thanks for your help. I have been reading through the basics and did find notein, noteout, and makenote and start to play with them.
Sampletank doesn't list MAX 1 as an option to receive MIDI from. The only option it lists is my soundcard, 2-Digidesign Mbox2 MIDI In. In MAX when I double click the noteout object it does not show from "Max 1" either It shows Microsoft Sythesizer, Microsoft GS Wavetable Synth, 2-Digidesign Mbox2 MIDI Out.
How can I get it to list MAX as an input and output?
Thanks again for your help.-Alisa

Just to update a bit...
I have been fiddling with the Audio Status window as recommended in the MSP inputs and outputs tutorial and cannot find any driver which changes the available MIDI inputs and outputs. I read this in the tutorial
"Note: Some devices such as the Digidesign mBox only support the ASIO driver standard. In such cases, you will need to select the proper ASIO driver in the Audio Status Window. See the section ‘Using ASIO Drivers on Windows’ for more information. "
Unfortunately I cannot find this section "Using ASIO Drivers on Windows" anywhere and it does not appear when I search on it in the help section either. I wish they had highlighted and linked it!

I have tried every driver in the Audio Status window and checked to see if it changed my available inputs and outputs with no luck. MAX does not appear as an input or output.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!--Alisa

The above mentioned midi output 'from max 1' is available only on Mac.
On Windows you need to install some extra app for midi routing like eg. 'MIDIYoke'.

I wasn't aware of the 'from max' option not being available on windows as @broc mentions, (makes life difficult for windows users!) try downloading and using that, i have just checked the forums and there is a few topics started on about midi yoke that might be useful.

Heres is a working patch that you can keep running while you have a play around trying to get it to work. (copy from here and click 'file' 'new from clipboard' in Max.

Regards,

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.
