open source... chess

Hello,
Just trying to learn my way around max but I need it to interact with a chess game and would prefer not to have to program in all the complicated rules of chess. Does anyone know of an open source chess game that works with max so I can use it in parallel with a live chess game (with a board connected by usb to the computer), I want to be able to trigger sounds
