[OT] Bootcamp on OS 10.4
Apologies for the OT ness, but there is a connection - I want to run
Bootcamp in order to port some Max projects.
Atm, I'm running OS 10.4.11; as I understand it, this 'upgrade' broke
Bootcamp on some, if not all systems. Whether or not this was a cynical
trick by Apple to make us buy Leopard, I don't know*, but I do still have a
copy of the Bootcamp beta for OS 10.4 versions prior to .11, so my question
is:
is it possible to 'downgrade' to OS 10.4.10, and if so, will the old
Bootcamp still run, or did it actually have an expiry date ? Are there any
other caveats to attempting this, such as QuickTime compatibility or
suchlike ?
I actually have a Leopard installer disc on my desk, but am reluctant to
use it whilst there is no supported version of pro Tools available (and even
when it does appear, I'll probably have to wait another six months whilst
Digidesign debug it )
Cheers
Roger
*The only reason I have to doubt this is that I can't imagine the Apple
marketing team supporting a campaign that ran along the lines of 'Buy
Leopard - it will enable you to run Windows!" ;-)
Bootcamp itself does not break with OS X versions...i.e. if you had a
windows install previously, your OS X install will not affect that
partition. However, the bootcamp utility does time out sometime around
the clock of 10.4.11. It was technical a "beta", meaning that it would
expire, and the full version is only available in leopard. It's just
the assistant that breaks, not the bootloader or any such thing.
If you still want to load a bootcamp partition on a expired
installation, you can just roll back the clock a year or two, and
reboot. Then run the assistant and make windows plague your pristine
macintosh. Then you can bring the clock back.

I was under the impression the tiger bootcamp beta expired at the beginning
of the year, and the that bootcamp is now a leopard only feature.

Or you can instead of bootcramp ;-) use rEFIt and never worry about
fabricated expiration dates. rEFIt works with OSX, Windows, external drives,
and even correctly recognizes Linux.
Best wishes,

Wow, hadn't heard of that one...
Thanks all; lots to consider here, but having heard that some folks are
managing to run Pro Tools on Leopard, I might just upgrade and be damned.
I fully expect to get my ass bitten, but then running Pro Tools even
without a system upgrade is something of a lottery anyway ;-)
Cheers

*Installing* Boot Camp may have timed out, but I'm using Boot Camp every day on one 10.4.11 machine and once/twice a week on another.
So the trick is to get it installed. Once installed it runs. And runs and runs and runs...
what is illegal if you put your comp date a year back...
anyway if you want to get rid of the M$ partition thats the only way...
but you'll need bootcamp 1.4 for 10.4.11...

In which country?
There seems to be "laws" which punish a suicide attempt with death...
