I currently have a Presonus Firebox and I'm really happy with it, but as I plan to move/tour and get a tiny new computer, I'm looking for a smaller soundcard (otherwise, even the AC adaptor of the Presonus will be heavier than my computer...).

Do you have any experiences with good (I guess usb) compact soundcards ?

Isn't the Firebox one of the smallest already? Isn't it bus powered? Or do you have an Firepod...

I am quite happy with the portability of my Quatafire which has the same size as a Firepod but is out of production now...

Anyway if you have a netbook, you won't have firewire, but Presonus has the Audiobox:

If you have heavy power supplies (with transformers) replace them with switching power supplies. There are universal ones with settable output voltage designed for notebooks...
