[OT] looking for cheap adat breakout box or similar
Sorry for the crappy gear questions. I am leaving a cheap system at an
installation for doing file mixing/panning. I already have an old G4 with
an RME PCI card, which has adat optical outs. I need a breakout box with 4+
outputs. (Ideally 8 balanced TRS, but rca is fine too) Inputs also would be
nice, but are not needed for this project. Looking for the cheapest
solution. (50-$150)
Hopefully there was some sort of master level control, via a knob on the
device as well.
Maybe I am better off starting from scratch with a low-end m-audio device?
Any suggestions or leads greatly appreciated

If you are serious about your music, don't buy Behringer. You'll
regret it all too soon. "buy cheap, buy twice" has never been so true...
sorry for the rant. I'va had some very bad experiences and know many
people who did too. The last Behry I had was a BCF-2000 (thinking
that it can't hurt cause it doesn't actually pass audio through) and
that failed so miserably that it crashed my computer during a very
important performance.
never again Behringer. that'll be on my techrider forever...;-)

I know what you mean, but don't agree - some of teh behringer stuffis
TOTAL crap, i agree; i heard stories about mixers (hello Patrick!) I
bought atube preamp which turned on to be a perfect white noise
generators (as were ALL of them the guy in the music staore told me)
but some of it is just great - and cheap
the ADA 8000 is a good exemple - I never had any problem with it,
works super well
and after trying a LOT of clean preamps for my bass
(bass->preamp->sound card) including some quite expensive things
(sans amp) and even some custom-made stuff, the BEST one i ever found
is the behringer PB100 booster - at less than 20 euros, generally 17
or so.
so, don't be so sure - it's always good to try - especially when a
try cost you 17 euros !! only to find that's what you've been looking
for!

Alright, I didn't mean to start an argument. I love most everything about
my Metric Halo, and don't expect anything for under $200 to sound good, just
that it works and is durable. I haven't ever owned anything Behringer, but
judging by the picture, the ADA8000, looks like a leaner design than their
mixers. I think I will go take a look, and maybe pick one up. It seems more
and more often, I am doing installation work, but there is no way I am going
to stick a bunch of my own quality gear in a low-end gallery for weeks on
end. But I have had this G4-400, doing nothing for me for quite some time,
and it is still a pretty good machine for doing something like just audio
spatialization.
I was hoping to find something even simpler, even with rca outputs to more
easily connect to consumer level gear.

I used an ADA8000 for a year or two attached to an RME multiface with no issues. When clocked from the multiface, the conversion quality was quite reasonable, compared to the multiface. I wouldn't use the mic pres however.
IMO this is what Behringer does quite well - small, simple gear at a budget price. I find their mini-mixers (UB602, etc) excellent little problem-solving tools where audio quality isn't the primary issue, like monitoring setups for musicians, etc. Their ECM8000 tiny-diaphragm reference mic (omni condenser) is also an overlooked cheapo winner.

Yeah, the XLR outs on the Behringer are a nuisance. Look for a used Fostex VC8 (good luck).

I have still a fostex adat converter around. 20-bit 8 in/8 out with rca.
Half rackspace. Where do you live? Your price range seems to fit and I
don't need it anymore...

Unfortunately not, but thats easy with MSP...

In my experience Behringer stuff can be very hit and miss, including the same model...it just depends from batch to batch.
So maybe use the local equivalent of agency staff in their factories...some batches are better than others, (and some are so bad they give the company as a whole a bad name)!
If you're going to buy cheap and buy twice, then your best best is to buy very cheap, (ala Behringer), and save for real quality (ala RME)...or better still, grab Stefan's Fostex asap ;-)
