OT: midi controller to send program change messages

Alexandra's icon

hi everyone,

i'm looking for a compact midi controller that will give me
individual buttons (at least 64 of them, maybe even more) for program
change messages.
i don't really need anything else, just a box with 64 buttons on it
to send program change messages.

which would be ideal, but i have no experience with hardware diy. i
would have to source and set up the buttons and their contact board
themselves, and fit the electronics in a case. i'd prefer a ready-
made solution.

does anyone know of something like this?

otherwise, i'll probably buy the doepfer and figure out how to attach
64 buttons to it in an orderly fashion. any tips on where to get the
hardware for this would be highly appreciated as well.

thank you!

alex

the only 64-button pre-built controller i'm aware of is the monome 40h:

not sure if this satisfies the "compact" requirement, but it's a
beautiful bit of work.

Have a look at the faderfox micromodul LX1 (I think it may now be
replaced by an updated, but similar, model). The 64 buttons send note
messages, but these can be interpreted to program changes in Max.

with any midi foot controller you have 127 program changes only 2
kliks away - the big ones have 12 programs/switches

or the most compact one - the Tech 21 midi mouse

__not what you ask for, but maybe a solution

i personally own a 40h, i really is a fantastic controller, although not cheap. they are on their last run of them, so id seriously consider it before they are all gone. if you are using it with max/msp, there is a version of the control software that is made in max/msp via the serial object (it uses a serial to USB adapter), so integration with max is super easy. note that the other non-max software is for OSX only (although that isnt really qa problem, im on PC and have succesfully used it with reaktor 5, with max as the go-between, and it still performs flawlessly).

hello, I use max and windows. very easy to setup and work a patch. the preset object, can store and recall program changes, bank changes and midi channel, any amount of midi devices connected to the tablet, and its a simple case of using a few objects to get things going, plus, max 8 now involves a learn function for connecting things, which makes its very easy to work with. a pic below to give you an idea.
