OT: need starting point for large video walls & Jitter
Hello Jittery Folks
I've been invited to submit a proposal for a video installation on two spaces in a US University building... there are two walls, 20 feet up (!) and 20 feet high; each 10 feet wide. They are interested in video walls. Sounds like a fun gig - and I know there are those of you who have had experience with such large installations. Where might I start investigating the equipment available for such video panels? What kinds of video input is required? And please, any other experiences anyone might offer to get me started on providing a rough estimate for the amount of money for the tech side of things...
I hope to be able to run a jitter-based setup into these "panels."
Thanks for any advice or experiences,
John
without knowing what you intend to create, or even how many projectors you are using, it's hard to offer much insight.
a mac pro (or similar pc) with 4 nvidia gtx gpus gives you a total of 8 outputs.
you can create 4 separate apps to run on each GPU, and possibly utilize more of the mulitcore CPU resources.
matrox dual/triple head2gos are also great for multiple projections.
for an LED wall of video.....
if you wanna do it cheap...look into making yourself an RGB value renderer from media input from disk or camera. use jitter to split up planes of video and then use pixels for DMX values to RGB fixtures. philips made stuff is reliable, tons of cheap chinese and korean manufacturers of LED stuff. you can get cheap led strips and install well and do a low res video render in jitter. if you buy units that snap together ethernet and do all the rendering for you as you send it video feeds it will be much more expensive because you push up into the entertainment industry stuff by barco, martin, dactronics, petes big tvs etc...
if you have the budget for it....
i really dig the komaden translucent mesh video

Thank you both - useful information. While I'm personally interested in the make-your-own idea, the client has aspirations to fancy, so I've been researching the modular 46" LCD panels (mentioned by piwolf above) - expensive (about $40K US per 6 ft x 10 ft wall) but could look interesting. But a lot less expensive than pre-made LED panels. Now I have to search for all those "multiple video cards with Jitter" posts I never read in the past!
Know any websites or artists doing interesting work with modular panel LCDs, I'd appreciate a pointer.
Thanks again,
John
I'm wondering if you could set up a video wall via mac mini—> triple head 2 go—> 3 lcd panels,
times as many networked modules as you need.
