I have a similar system. I did have problems with focus when releasing a wire on the earlier versions of Max 7. No problems with 7.3.1.

Hmm, it started happening when I vastly extended the width of the [select] object.

I guess Max is figuring out how many holes there are that could be connected in that time of release, I don't know

It's a first world problem. the patch itself executes fine and is not laggy, just the cords a bit sludgy.
