Pictctrl/PictSlider problem in latest version
Hello,
I'm not sure if this issue is specific to Max 6.1 or Max 6, but I am having trouble loading .pct image files on Windows 7 x64 running Max 6.1 (32-bit). I have QuickTime installed but get a "error -1 loading ***.pct" in the Max Window.
Interestingly, I reinstalled Max 5.1.9 to check because I remembered it working correctly in Windows so long as QuickTime was installed, and sure enough the images load fine.
Thanks for any and all help.
"Max and MSP should have nearly all the same features, except where it relies on QuickTime (e.g. PICT files are not currently supported under 64bit and instead we recommend converting to PNG or JPG). "
take a look at the release announcement for more info:

@kcoul: Could you please confirm in which version of the software you are experiencing this. Open the about max window via Windows help menu, or Macintosh Max menu, and click the link to copy support information and post it here. As Rob mentioned, Max 6.1 64bit will not support PICT files currently, but the 32bit version you reported should. Thanks for double checking that, and providing us with the system information.
Hi Joshua,
Sorry for the long wait, I don't frequent the boards as frequently as I wish I could.
Anyway, a few months later the same issue is recurring in the same conditions. The version is Max 6.1.3 32bit, and with Quicktime installed, .pct files still will not load.
I am currently on Windows 8 64-bit OS, but last time I was on Windows 7 64-bit OS.
Thanks for any help as it is the main limiting factor for the Windows implementation of the UBC Toolbox at the moment: http://www.opusonemusic.net/muset/toolbox.html
this problem appears also e.g. in MaxMspver 6.1.3 32-bit (w7)
if we try to load under MaxMsp created patches like.mxb the
pictctrl: error -1 loading .pct or
fpic: can't load file .pct
(the .pct files resides in the correct path etc of course) appears in the Max Window
MaxMsp-patches ins vst-Format)
why can't it just work!!!!!!!
Sorry about procrastinating, running Max6 6.1.6 on 64-bit Windows 7.
In the mean time I will have to convert all PCT graphics to PNGs manually, sucks.
Yep. Here's a clear guide of what to do for anyone stuck in the no pict support in Max 6 Windows situation:
1) Download/install Max 5.
2) Convert all your .pcts to .png
3) Open the patcher in Max 5, and manually replace every pct reference to png. Save.
4) Now open in Max 6 and your patch should look normal.
To Cycling: If pct support is not planned for Windows for the near future, it would be nice to have the pictctrl inspector image browse launch button to default to png, instead of pct.
Running Max 7 on windows 7, both 64 bit, latest Quicktime installed.
I am using .png's for all my fpics. Still it looks terrible, even max itself looks pixelated.
Is there an easy solution to make at least Max look ok? Should I change the monitor, graphic card, Windows version, anything?
