I'm not 100% sure but I don't believe MAX natively supports mp3's or oggs or any other high-type format.

Your best bet is to convert the file yourself to a type that is supported, such as aiff or wav.

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

the trick is to use the "import" message...at least that is how i do it to read any file. Hope this helps.

i had this issue with an MP3 and found the import message just wasnt working, i got round it by saving the MP3 as a wav and used the read message. i understand this is not ideal but as wav is an uncompressed format the mp3 doesn't gain or lose any frequency content or size.

below is my patch as you'll see the read message is for VBR and CBR converted MP3s.

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

then, it worked a treat!

What exactly wasn't working? I've never had any problem with < import > (keep in mind that since < import > has to convert the MP3 into PCM audio it could take a while). Did you have a problem on Windows? I think buffer~ using QuickTime for the conversion, so maybe there was some issue with your QuickTime install—I'm not really sure, just guessing.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding you, but while there should be no quality change going from MP3 -> WAV at the same sampling rate the file size will certainly get bigger.

buffer~ uses Quicktime to import non-native formats like mp3. In my experience, on the Mac it works OK, but in Windows it takes a looong time; it becomes irresponsive and seems like Max crashed and then comes to life again.
If you search the forums, you'll notice this is a recurring problem. But if you're on Mac OS X, it should work fine...

there is nothing to call "support" for mp3 in max. you can waste your time trying the quicktime method, but it ends up converting to wave (at least so on windows).

Mr. Branshee your method works great!
