Play a video with its audio content (multichannel) in MAX!!
Hello everyone.
I don't usually use MAX for video; I work more with audio. So I'm not very familiar with the video side of MAX!
I have a question that seems simple, but I can't figure it out! I want to play a video with its audio in MAX. The video's audio is multichannel (12 channels). How can I do this?
Thanks for your help.
I think this still stands: https://cycling74.com/forums/spigot-for-multichannel-audio-video-files#reply-58ed21d6b7244922ce2680af
Thanks. But in this example, the audio isn't the same as the video.
Actually, I want to create a multichannel VLC player by playing a video and its 12-channel audio in MAX.
Robs answer is still valid: [jit.movie~] can't output more than two audio channels, so best is to split the video from the audio, play the video with [jit.movie] driven by [sfplay~] playing the multichannel audio as seen in the example. Yes in the example the audio and video don't match, but it was for the sake of the example, the principle still stands.
If you don't have access to the source files of the video (allowing to export the audio separately), you can always use ffmpeg to extract the audio from your video file.
Okay, I'll look into ffmpeg because my need is to separate the audio from the video. I find it strange that this separation isn't possible in Max. Sometimes, I get the feeling they overlook basic features!
Thank you very much for your answers.
This should get you started. ffmpeg is a command-line tool, so if you're not familiar with this it can be quite confusing at the beginning.
If you search for "separate audio from video" you will probably find online tools, but with less control and with the possibility that you end up with a mixed down stereo mp3. With ffmpeg you can select the audio stream (if your file has several), decide whether or not to just make a copy of it or encode it to another format, remap the channels, etc.
Well, I tried using the suggested patch, but I immediately see a problem: I have to change that /1 to /2, otherwise my videos (PAL 25, 30, 30drop) run at exactly double the speed. Other than that, everything else seems to work fine, but I should check whether the audio-video connection is maintained even on longer durations (I'm at the airport, so I can't do the necessary tests here).
This doesn't mean it's time Cycling74 solved this problem with a multichannel jit.movie~ object, with TC output.
Separating audio from video always gives me a bad feeling about sync, since that's actually what's used for professional digital cinema.
