Possible to calculate when am distorton occurs in compression?

When having release times less than 5 ms and high attack rate, compression starts to sound ugly. I dont understand exactly what happens though, except that the makeup gain is going up and down so fast that modulation sounds occur. anyone explain this in a good way?

a dynamics effect such as compressor or limiter contains a change of gain. and any change of gain is audible when its speed comes in the range of the audible frequency range.
that is why many dynamics effects are programmed to "look forward" and work somehow "adaptive", similar to the way how you use highpass filtering to get rid of DC offset.
take the orginal audio and a proessed file of you 5 ms attack compressor and look at the waveform in some editor program, that should give you a good .. err.. picture of what happens.
