Reaktor in Max

Tex's icon

Hello all;

I'm trying to figure out how I might go about using some of my Reaktor ensembles in Max. (maybe it would be easier to use my Max stuff in Reaktor I don't know)
Could someone give me an idea about how to start looking in this please?

It seems that sometimes this involves using one or the other as a vst plug-in. For the record, my Library/Audio/Plug-Ins/Vst folder has no Reaktor or Max/MSP files.

Any help you can give is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

The easiest way is probably to use Reaktor inside Max as a vst (cf [vst] help file).

that's not possible to use Max *in* Reaktor because Reaktor is not a DAW.
And even if it was, it would not be possible anymore with Max5 because Cycling had the great idea to stop developing Pluggo (which allowed you to use Max patches as VST plugins).

(By the way, I think that after some months of total silence, this "we gave up with Pluggo, just use Live" new directive from c74 is a shame, really.
SC looks prettier every day...)

You can also use something like Jack (http://jackaudio.org) and have Max audio out sent to Reaktor audio in (and vice versa), with both apps running.

as I stated before, you cannot use vst plugins inside Reaktor, but you can inside Max.

then I guess that your Reaktor installation is messed up, or you just forgot to install the vst functionality ?

Also, check the Mac HD:library/audio/plugins/vst folder, not just the one in your user folder.

in any case, trying loading reaktor in max using the vst~ object.
It would look like this-

[vst~ Reaktor5]

I use Max together with Reaktor a lot. I use Max as the control
environment and use vst~ to load Reaktor ensembles.
I tend to use Reaktor as an FX processor but Reaktor's
sequencers are very handy inside Max as well.

Thanks so much everybody! Yes, the Reaktor.vst file is in the HD/Library and not in my User/Library folder. Thanks Nick for noticing that I was looking in the wrong place.
I've managed to get an ensemble working in Max as a vst. I don't have a very good grasp on everything yet so we'll see what happens but I'm on my way thanks to you all.

Thanks again for the help.

Hey Anthony I am a little confused about how to use MIDI with Reaktor as a vst in Max. There seem to be no inputs for MIDI controller messages in the vst~ object and the Reaktor ensemble I have open doesn't respond to MIDI (indicates no input) on it's own. There is something obvious that I'm missing.
Thanks for the help.

Yes, it is a little tricky. You have to format the MIDI message
a particular way before sending it to vst~. I am at work right now,
when I get home I will post my Reaktor patch so you can see.

Here is my Reaktor VST patch...

Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

Thanks so much for posting your patch. Very nice JSUI things! I don't have the r_switch.jpg but no matter. I've put your patch in a bpatcher and am still at a loss as to how to make MIDI work. There are two Audio inputs, a control input and a MIDI input. Just hooking up a midiin or a ctlin object seems to get MIDI signals to the Reaktor ensemble but it's obviously not done correctly by me here. Is there a special way MIDI has to be served up to vst~?
Thanks again for sharing your work!

The inlet labeled "MIDI Input" takes note input.
That is a note number and velocity.

I've been trying to send note data to Kontakt2 vst~ but I don't have any luck at all. I'm using Max5. I tried attaching midiin directly to the vst object but nothing sounds. So I used the kslider attached to feed in notes, but the Max window tells me that the vst object is treating noteon and velocity information as program changes. What's going on?
Thanks for any help!

Even though this is an old thread, you are kind of hijacking it right now. It's best to start a new thread and keep this one about Max and Reaktor.

Sorry about that! Since it was about using Reaktor with the vst object, I thought it was pertinent since Kontakt is also made by NI. Please accept my apologies.
