recommend me a firewire audio interface.
it's time for a new soundcard. i have a fasttrack pro now but lately i'm into live sampling and i wan't more ins & outs. also i want a firewire device because i wan't to have an extra usb port free on my MBP for an extra hub.
i have 400 euro's to spend and now i'm looking at the focusrite saffire pro 10. 8 XLR in and 8 out with 2 dedicateble headphone outputs seems the best i can get in my price range. any thoughts on this interface. maybe other recommendations? are there soundcards wich interact better with max then others?
i need at LEAST 4 in and 6 out and MIDI I/O.
I've heard good things about the focusrite saffire, though have never seen it in the flesh.
I strongly discourage you to buy a lower-end m-audio f/w card (can't speak for the more pricey ones) I have an m-audio firewire 4/10, the controls are clunky and low resolution- particularly the volume which tends to jump to speaker crunching levels when you try to turn it down. also I worry that i'm going to break the plastic i/o's whenever I plug a lead in. An old housemate had a similar m-audio model with similar problems, it also caused processing noise through one of her monitors.
good luck with your search

FA-101 is rather solid for ~$300-350 with 10 i/o (2 preamped), up to 24/96
and MIDI i/o. As a bonus it is compact and runs off of fw power (on mbps
only). Ua-101 is its usb counterpart, somewhat more expensive, but also
supposedly has better 0-latency monitoring mixer. We have 15+ of them in
DISIS and they are quite solid. We particularly like them as they work with
Mac, Windows, and Linux.

I've also had good luck with the Edirol (FA-101); I bought it based
partly on Ico's
advice. The dacs (especiall a-d) may be a bit harsh on the high end
according
to People Whose Ears I Respect, but I'm old and played in loud punk-
bands
when I was younger.

I've used the Presonus Firebox (4in/6out) for a few years and have been happy with it. It's small, sturdy, clean (and loud) sounding, simple to use and has a software routable headphone output (in case you want to dj with it).
Good luck,
S.
I've been using a motu 828mkII for years and never once had a problem. Their newer products have a lot more features and portability, and if they are as stable as the mkII then I would definitely recommend them!
I've also heard a rumor that motu has a policy of simply replacing any of their units if they can't fix them, even if out of warranty. I haven't actually had a problem, so I can't confirm this.
thanks for all the advice.
my local dealer told me he had not very good expiriences with edirol and only sells them on order. he always gives me very good advice. so i think i won't go with edirol, altough it is very cheap.
i think motu is a bit out of my price range. but i'll have a look at that.
i think max/msp doesn't care wich soundcard you have right? they're all compattible?

The FA-101 is the exception to the rule regarding Edirol, wit. I can
vouch for the usefulness and coolness of this device. Everything is
neat, even the headphone amp is nice and loud. I run it both off bus
power (desktop) and off the adaptor (laptop) and never have any problems,
I've used it for a while now, and have wanted one ever since I read the
glowing reviews in the tech magazines some years back.

are you talking about edirol or motu?
yo Nit
The Focusrite is really good that you first said about.
As Nick said he has a mk2. I have an mk3, and also have not had any problems, a great bit of kit that can work without even a computer attached, basically use it as a mixer.
For the nice price of $500, it is a bargain for what you get. But then again, the best way to really know for yourself is to test them in the music shops, also ask good questions and even silly ones to the staff, they should know what they are talking about.
Or better still ask for guidance from the cats at sweetwater.com They know a great deal and can help you even more.
Hope this helped...
I've got a Focusrite, and am pretty happy with it - better sounding
preamps than the presonus, I think, and seems to be holding up pretty
well. minuses: I hate the interface software, which more or less
works, but is rather poorly designed, and it sucks up more of my CPU
than my RME does (however, that is $1000 more and considerably
heavier....)
FWIW,
M

Maybe check to make sure you have the latest/correct drivers for your soundcard from the focusrite website:
good luck,

also, I would recommend powering on the soundcard before you boot up the macbook, at least make sure the firewire cable is connected. unless of course the manual states otherwise!
the firewire-cable is always connected and i tried powering up the soundcard before my macbook but it didn't help.

did you try downloading drivers from the focusrite link? if you're still having trouble, check if the card has any history of problems with your particular macbook - otherwise you may have received a broken card or firewire cable
I have had/used tons of different FW interfaces over the years. The
only ones I still like and own are made by Metric Halo. Reliable and
great sounding, with good tech support and plenty of useful updates.

try to get a second hand motu traveler. Very reliable and extenable.
Just saw one on ebay for 400 bugs
My experiences with Travelers and Max have been less than stellar. The
Traveler will be easily provoked to emit tweeter destroying high
pitched noise. This can be solved with some button press magic, but I
think this shouldn't happen at all. As I stated before, the only FW
interfaces that I've found to be reliable were the MOTU 828 mk2 and
the ones made by Metric Halo.

I've been using a Traveler with Max 4 for years, and never experienced this problem, or any other for that matter. For me, it's been a rock-solid performer.
