Recording Live Audio into D.A.W. (Nuendo)

fletcher's icon

I have researched (see notes) this issue with no solution so I turn to you. Thank you for your time!

I am looking to record live audio done in Max/MSP into Nuendo. I can get audio into Nuendo with rewire. The issue though is that I cannot set an audio track to record the max channel. It is not available as an input. Am I missing something with rewire or is this an issue with Nuendo not recognizing rewire as an audio input?

Thank you again,

NOTES: There is a similar post here and I will try creating a plug-in as the last resort:
https://cycling74.com/forums/index.php?t=msg&goto=49060&rid=0&srch=record+nuendo#msg_49060

I have read through the tutorials (a little limited on Rewire) and opened up the help file for rewire as well but did not find an answer.

Hi Chad,

What OS are you on? (This is always worth including).

Your issue with ReWire is to do with the way Nuendo's designed, and
there's no way of getting around it (with rewire, afaik).

If you're on Mac OS check out soundflower:
https://cycling74.com/downloads/soundflower

or Jack for OS X
http://www.jackosx.com/

If you're on Windows I'm not aware of a similar solution. One way would
be to use a plug-in like TapeIt on the rewire channel, but this would
seem to defeat the point of putting into nuendo in the first.

Thank you for the info, I will try these solutions.

Sorry about the lack a detail. Here is my system info:
PC
Windows XP
Nuendo 2
Max/MSP 4.6.2
Jitter 1.6.2
Motu 828

I do have Max/MSP installed on my Mac laptop (OS 10.4) but don't do run a D.A.W. on it, it is a slower machine.

Owen mentioned this is an issue with Nuendo. Is there another applications that will record audio from Max/MSP? I need something quite stable as this is for a live performance.

Live, Logic, DP, Sonar, anything? Thank you very much for your feedback!

I'm unsure of how ReWire channels are handled in other DAWs. What I have
used on windows to record them in Nuendo is this plugin:
http://www.silverspike.com/?Products:TapeIt

However, did you try the Jack for Windows that Alessandro posted? If it
works, then it's at least free.

Why not record it to hard drive from within max, using sfrecord~? It
works fine.
You can either use multiple sfrecords for separate tracks, or use a
single sfrecord~ to record many tracks. Be aware that if you do the
latter, you'll need a way fo splitting up the resultant file into
separate tracks for your sequencer of choice. There is a max utility
to do this, or you can use SampleManager (which is what I do)
