I think its additive synthesis, but it doesn't sound like sinewaves

Hi MK, I see this thread is rather old, but I'd bet it's FM, I just don't know the specifics of his sound.

Did you happen to investigate this any further?

Hi MK, interesting, I just read an interview with Lazar in which additive synthesis is mentioned. Naturally it is possible to do everything in additive synthesis, but it just seems me simpler (and less resource-intensive) to achieve similar results with FM, in that it seems me that you would have to have LOTS of sinewaves repeating with a few specific proportions over the spectrum.
With FM, you can use one carrier, one operator at say 1.41x, another at 2x and another at 6x carrier frequency, each modulating another in series, maybe one of them with some feedback. By controlling levels of the operators over time you can get close to what you want, I think. I never got satisfying results with FM implemented in MAX/MSP though, only with Dexed (free) or FM8.
Did you ever try this with additive synthesis in Max?

oh, it does.

but i think he is playing a bit with phase, sounds a bit like an allpass.
