Saariaho's Noa Noa
I'm looking for a working version of the patch for Kaija Saariaho's Noa Noa, for solo flute and electronics, preferably in MAX 5. The electronics were originally created by Jean-Baptise Barriere and Xavier Chabot. I'm assisting a flute player at the University of Colorado at Boulder with the technical aspects of the performance, and we've purchased the part from Chester Novello (Saariaho's publisher), but the patch that they distribute online doesn't work.
Though I've contacted both Barriere and Chabot (still waiting to hear back), I figured I should stretch out some tendrils and see if any one on the forums here already has a solution.
Or, alternately, if anyone has a solution to getting this old MAX application working, I'd be insanely grateful.
That's actually a newer version than the one I have. They used to have a folder with the patches and samples at that link instead of a standalone, but the old version only runs in 4.6 and is locked anyway; it crashes Max 5.
That app loads fine for me, the only errors it reports are not finding a load of audio files.

Yeah the standalone doesn't have her sounds with it. The 2.5 version did have them.
I've been talking with the flute player, apparently US Distributor Flute World didn't ship the CD ROM that now contains the the audio files that are missing with the part, so we are going to get a hold of them, and then Chester Novello as a last resort (to avoid shipping from the UK). Argh.
You don't happen to have a .zip of that 2.5 version by any chance?
I do have it, although I'm reluctant to share the sound files with it publicly, as they are a copyrighted part of the score. You can email me offline if you like.
I did notice that with the 2.6 version there are two sound files that the buffer~ expects that aren't part of the files from the old version. The two files are 'harm.aiff' and 'nowrap-ramp.aiff'.
Indeed, if those files are now published on the CDROM, I wouldn't want to pilfer the hard work of Saariaho, Barriere, and Chabot.
The missing buffers go into the harmonizer subpatch, and their absence is probably why that just exploded in my face.
harm and nowrap are part of the IRCAM harmonizer, if you need them here they are:
Sorry to re-open this post, but I can't seem to get the standalone that's linked on the chester website to work... Is something missing?
Phembree, did you get it working in the end? I'd really appreciate it if you could let me know what exactly it was that you did to GET it working...
The reverbs in this patch just don't work for me...
The harmonizer blows out, but I'm assuming that that's because I haven't loaded the sound-files yet (the flautist I'm working with has them)...
Any advice GREATLY appreciated!
Thanks!
You might have already done this, but you could also try contacting the Finnish Music Information Centre. I've not ever talked to them, but have heard they can be extremely helpful (even sending free CDs and scores etc to people. Maybe it's worth a try if you have run into a dead end?
