scale and chord app?

maxplanck735@hotmail.com's icon

Hey, do you guys know of any computer program or max patch that helps with music composition?

I'm thinking of something that, for example, has a list of all the scales. The user selects a scale, and a note on the keyboard as the root note, and then the other notes in that scale light up on the on-screen keyboard.

Also, once a scale and root note is selected, the user can select any note in the scale and see a list of the chords which will fit inside that scale and can be built off of the selected note as the root of the chord.

Ideally, such a program could output MIDI too.

Anyone know of anything like this, or even something better that I haven't thought of?

Thanks, any info is much appreciated

Not sure if theres an existing program but I'd imagine it wouldnt be too hard to build with a combination of coll, some ksliders and alot of patience - not sure you'll get someone elses version but- if you want to build it you'll find we're pretty helpful on this forum

did you try band in a box?

there is this:
http://www.michaelnorris.info/modes.html
But it doesn't give you different transpositions of your scales.

check out my library: the Modal object library. it does everything you want with any mode or scale including chords and triads, progressions, etc.

www.vincemanzo.com/modalchange

Look for it on maxobjects.com

Sounds promising, but:
The link is dead unfortunately, and I couldn't find a single download
link for any of your projects on your site.
In addition your site loads extremely slow, due to the fact that all
videos want to play immediately without request. Seem there is some
space for significant enhancement of your site...
People are off before they found anything interesting...

there's no link to download because it's pay software.

BTW-- the corrected link is:

or you can search it at Maxobjects.com

For Stefan Tiedje and other people who only have a 56k connection, you can see the non-video description at maxobjects.com :)

Hey Vince, your library is very interesting. Definitely a good
learning tool for scales and chords. Does it use any externals
that are not in the standard Max distribution?

I would really make it easy if you want to sell your stuff. I have a DSL
connection btw., but just imagine this is shared over a slower wifi
connection... You just push potential customers away for no good reason.
If I want to see a video, I know that I might have to wait, but I would
like to invoke it myself...

damn, another unfree max library I have to bookmark and never get around to buying. [yes, I'm talking about you, Litter Pro]

how much is this? I cant seem to find a price or how to buy it

I saw $79 somewhere on the page. It sounds interesting but buying before
trying is not my policy. Is there a disabled demo available?

The object you're really paying for is the Modal Change object that handles all of the scale data for major, harmonic minor, harmonic major and melodic minor and each of the 7 modes for each of these categories (28 modes all together). It outputs all of the pitch classes in order and puts the data in a table as well. It also puts the data into a coll file which, when used in an atonal patch, can easlly filter notes that are not from the user selected mode to those from the mode. For instance, if you play a D in Db Major, it will bump the note up to D.

Additional objects in the library are modal shift (finds modes related to the one you select sharing 6 of the 7 notes), modal mutation (same as modal shift only with a common root, the Messiaen objects (all of the Messaien Modes of Limited Transposition), Modal chord and traid (for..you guessed it chords and triads), Modal prog, for created 4, 8, 12 or 16 bard progressions based on each mode, some netwroking obhjects to control Modal change via a network, and an analysis object which takes all notes played within a specified time frame an analyses them to identify the mode (all included is a simple note naming app where you manually enter the notes..I use this when I teach theory).

The Modal change object and the Messiaen objects all have the ability for you to input your own scale degree distance map 9in steps...for instance major scale is whole whole half whole whole wheole half--can be implemented 2 2 1 2 2 2 1). If the user entered mode is unidentified it will say that it doesn't have a name for it, but will still output all pitches from the scale in order and input the data into a table.

oops...typos and other blunders in my last post (supposed to be Db :) )

That's what you get for staying up all night in Max...

Hallo Max--

Lot of interesting and impressive responses to this post.

I have a Max standalone for OSX available at:

Not as complex at VJ Manzo's specialized object, but it may serve
some of your needs.

It's free, and I wrote it simply to aid my own practice in chord
recognition. Gives you significant control over the spread of the
chords -- closed, varieties of open (with user defined ranges for
spread and root, and a "random" option). It also arpeggiates, and
outputs either to the quicktime object or to MIDI, per se. It is
fairly self-explanatory (ie, just "use it"), and if you dig into
the sub-patches you will find one or two extra controller
surprises.

I'd be interested in feedback or comments from anyone who finds it
useful.

Cheers,
d.

If you are interested in making it yourself, a good starting point is the "scaler.pat" patcher in the examples folder.

It's been a while since something I've done has been described as tantalizing.-}

All joking aside, the request for a UB version of the Starter Pack is well-taken. No promises of release dates or anything, but I do understand that PPC is simply not an option anymore for many people.

I also appreciate the nod of support for Stacey, thanks nesa!

A nice clean patch!
Only drawback for Maxers, its a standalone...
Is the source available? or is it possible to get it as collective?
Source would be nice, (it's already visible), and I think it can teach a
lot about Max, especially for those who believe they can do anything in
Live... ;-)

I know this thread is long dead by now, but...

I've decided to offer my Modal Object Library for free. This library will do anything from the 28 diatonic modes of the major, harmonic minor, melodic minor and harmonic major scales, as well as the Messiaen modes, triads, chords, progressions, modal mutation and relationships as well as modal analysis.

This was all part of the research I was doing for my Master's at NYU, so everything is well documented. You can find this library at:

All I require is for you to register which, is, of course, free.
