Scrolling LCD Display
Hello Cycling74 community,
I have a problem I could use some input on:
The included patch basically explaines it all, but I have a message box that display the ASCII numbers that a umenu displays, then it needs to be converted into a constantly changing list of 5 numbers that triggers the LCD displays... It sounds complicated, but check out the patch and see for yourself...

That's a pretty cool idea and it looks good. I'm confused about what you want to do with the scrolling aspect though, just a way to display more than 5 letters wide so that longer names/text can be shown? If that's the case, you might try a pipe object for the unpacking of the ASCII numerical values. Then they could come out of the pipe in delayed fashion to the respective colls. It would take some doing (I don't know the particulars) but it might be possible. You'd have to have a set maximum number of letters, though, to initialize the pipe object's arguments.
I imagine there's a way to make a scrolling LED display of arbitrary length. In the meantime, maybe use cycle or bucket. The integer ASCII inputs would activate bucket's shift mechanism, just use your metro to bang the integers in. Again, don't know exactly how to do it, but hope this gives some ideas.
You might want to make the actual LED panels in a separate file and then use bpatcher. This might make for easier management, plus you could have as many iterations of it as you want (more than a 5-wide display if desired, etc). Also it would make for easier changing of colors etc. if you want, just send messages to each bpatcher and the color changing is done inside.
It would be nice to have smaller LEDs to make different-sized displays if desired, to improve resolution. But as an "at-a-glance" indicator it looks pretty cool.

OK, I figured out some stuff. Check it out, the patch is a little cluttered but seems to work. It can display arbitrarily long lists in the five displays, speed-controllable. The length of the list of characters automatically sets the counter so that the display stops when the last letter is put on. (The bucket needs a bang at the end to put on the last character, I discovered. Little things you don't see coming...)
Cool collaboration! I like the LED idea and I plan to use it too.
Did it take long to determine the binary lists in the colls? ;-) hopefully not TOO long...

one more thing, connect the metro speed number box to the delay object's right (delay-time-set) inlet. That way the last letter (that is triggered by the bang on the bucket) displays in the same tempo as the rest.

Wow CJ, thanks a lot for taking a crack at this! I really like what you did. I still need to look at it a little more before I can fully understand what it is you did... =) but I really like the fact you did some more labeling!

Great! Interesting that my brother is currently working on LED electronics, and I could use a version of this patch for determining how to set the array values for various letters. So, with a given resolution (like 20 * 16 LEDs), one could click the LED's to make your letter look right, then save it as "a", "B", etc. This would provide an easy interface for setting the binary values of on/off for each LED in each letter. So anytime one types a letter, Max could access the stored value in a coll or whatever and the LEDs would light up accordingly.
With enough resolution one can do different fonts etc. too. Very handy patch and it's immediately applicable. Great forum collaboration!
I'll post the LED creator when that's done. I imagine that one would save each letter to correspond to the ASCII value, with an additional value to determine the "font set" one wants to use. This could be used in scrolling LED displays (you know, the *real* ones outside restaurants etc.)

Yes, that patch with the piture button is very cool Roman Thilenius, thank you! I like that it makes the LED's smaller and much easier to form and read. Now after seejayjames finnishes his led list compiler, we will really be in buisness!

You could also use lcd object and it's getpixel message to create colls
automatically, no?
or you could do it manually, with matrixctrl? that could be 'TOO long'

Hey all! here is the lcd coll creator that I made last night... you kind of have to click a lot, but I think it makes it a little easier than trying to type in 1's and 0's.

Its simpler as it sounds...
In the final patch you should put the displays into a bpatcher...

If you want not so many patchchords, you can use a matrixctrl:
