ola!
i have another predicament. im working on a piece where i want the audience to be able to send text to the players on stage remotely from their mobile phones. Im not really sure where to start, i dont want to be sitting recieveing txt messages on my pphone and frantically typing them into the computer, at the same time i dont want to have to distibute java applets to each person in the audience b4 the gig.
Is there any streamlined way to recieve messages on my phone and then have max read them from my phone, via bluetooth or usb??

I have used a GSM modem for this with some sucess. But it needs a lot of
twaeking until you get the [serial] object to correctly work with the
GSM modem because the communication needed is quite complex.

not exactly an answer but a few years ago I had to put a new HD in my
Powerbook G4, and I reinstalled a new OS (etc) just before playing -
during the perf (on max) I kept receiving messages about some mobile
phone named "luigi" trying to send me pictures via bluetooth. Yes, I
forgot to switch bluetooth off.

after the show it was really good that i did not met anyone by the
name of luigi (with a mobile phone in hand !!!!)

so it was not in max directly but seems very possible to do. It is
however distracting to receive this kind of messages when playing!!

if you're willing to get a bit down and dirty, you can run an SMS
server - http://www.kannel.org

then you can receive text messages, route them by keyword, and run
all sort of scripts. you might be able to find code to adapt to max
(it's an opensource project)

as for doing it via the serial object, good luck - you'd need to do a
lot of intricate things to get a properly formatted message sent and
received. maybe mxj (java) will work, too, i know there are java
projects that use sms functionality.
