setting [grab] target
I want to use the grab function in a dynamic way, i.e set the target and
then grab it. The external doesn't have a "set" messages. Does anyone know
an elegant workaround or alternative?

As great as the help files are, they don't tell you everything.
I found the set message by ctl+opt clicking on the object, and read about it on p. 225 of the Max Reference Manual.
In short, it works.
