[sharing my album] a new album - cvrtne.iiiii
hw
i recently made an album entirely composed in max/msp,
so i thought i'd share. hope you enjoy.
it's a drone album with rather simple wavetable synthesis.
waveforms are derived from the infamous equation (which i don't know the proper name):
f(t)=(t-t*a)(t-1)(t+1)(t*a-1)(t*a+1)
the composing max patch only has two interactive section: length of the piece and series of numbers.
series of numbers represent fundamental frequency of all wavetables and each wavetable’s parameters.
the series of numbers can be divided into categories.
for example,
35.3 11 60 5 5. 2 26 11 6.5 13 121 11 7.2 11 49 11 1.6 15 78 14 2.2 8 39 4 5.4 14 86 11 7.1 7 86 11 7.3
the very first number is the fundamental. the followings are four numbers for each wavetable times eight.
i.e. the numbers above can be broken down to:
35.3 // fundamental frequency
11 60 5 5. // parameters for the first wavetable
2 26 11 6.5 // parameters for the second wavetable
13 121 11 7.2 // parameters for the the third wavetable and so on...
11 49 11 1.6
15 78 14 2.2
8 39 4 5.4
14 86 11 7.1
7 86 11 7.3
the parameters are,
1. order# of overtone (integer)
2. variable a of the equation (integer)
3. unstability of the waveform (integer)
4. amplitude envelope form with respect to duration (floating point)
you can download the album here...

but notice that this isn't an mp3 release but a video release so the zip file is huge!
if you just want the max patch, it attached to this post.
you can preview the video at youtube.

What you do is amazing! I am always happy to see and wait for your new works =) Thanks!
Sounds good! And by the way.. Excellent Idea! Creating it and presenting it to us in max as a patch!
thanks for kind words...
glad that you enjoyed.
for a couple of years i was trying to run away from music with fixed time length to, what i'd call, spontaneous music on fixed system (or everyone else calls it "wind-chime" System).
but there were some inspirations and i decided to make a few pieces that have intended fixed length of time. it turned out to be a lot of fun.
i'm a big fun of kim cascone but not very familiar with the work of xenakis. (i enjoyed the ryoji ikeda's remix a lot though.)
i'm trying beat music right now with similar concepts.
some of it is actually on the page. more to come...
Another banger!
I was looking at your videos on youtube and was wondering if you have the patch for the video titled "dtb_ftta - rhythm + noise", i would like to have a study of it if you still have it available?
Thanks for the music, Patrick.
Mesa, this is wonderful, I was playing all day with it.
Of course the patch mutated during that process, now its a Max 5 patch and the user interface is slightly more accessible - I can tweak each parameter in real time and can listen to the difference and what it means...
I also moved the oscillator sub patch out of the main patch as an abstraction, and connected all parameters with pattrs etc...
This is really so much more than just watching a video or listening to a cd, which is always the same...
I made some changes in the way of communication, but hopefully no changes in the piece. Its hard to tell though, its sounds similar to me, but you could tell better...
Thanks a lot...
Stefan
Now the "album" has an infinite duration, and will play piece after piece. You can switch it to a single piece though. Also cleaned up a bit more...
@mesa: in your original patch you could get rid of the 500 ms delay by switching the order of the first multiplication inside of the tone patches. The fundamental is coming in last...
Stefan
wow, there are some remixes going on!
absolutely great!
@Rapoon
w2p was an old patch but i'm glad that you find some use for it!
@Patrick Keenan
thanks for the kind words.
dtb_ftta can be found on the bottom of this page...

@stefantiedje
now this is absolutely amazing.
i don't have max 5 (just the runtime) so i couldn't look inside but i was able to look inside of cvrtne_tone.maxpat and to be honest i didn't really understand what's going on on the top (with pattr?). i guess i need the new max book and max 5...
i also love your repeat mode and how it changes the duration each time.
i didn't hear much of the difference that you mentioned but if it's different, maybe it is for the better, although i wonder what it sounds like if you change the wavetable size from 128 to 256 or even to 512 and 1024.
i wanted to try that but max 4 and my old, old intel CPU wouldn't let me...
I hope there is no difference in the sound of your composition, I would not want to touch that. So I guess I did not mess it up.
But I couldn't resist, and watching the videos, I thought my version had too much visible technical part while playing. Thats why I enhanced it even further - (this has to stop now..!-)
If you push the start button, all parameters will fade away, but come back if you hover over them. And of course now you can start and stop with the space key...
(And there is a hidden way to read your original post in this thread, I wonder if you find it...;-)
I consider this as an interpretation of your composition. I hope it is close enough to your idea of the piece...
Have fun...
Stefan
no, no, don't stop!
but yes, this is really nice too. i like the idea.
now i have an idea to make waveform glow depending on the amplitude,
because it's kinda hard to tell which waveform is being the loudest...
i'll post this as soon as i can get my hands on max5.
@mesa.elech/tele
This max patch is AWESOME. I just recently was introduced to Max/msp and I'm addicted now. I'm a musician and the things that I could do with this program....I've recently been experimenting with ambient soundscape/drone music. I LOVE falling asleep to these kinds of drones. Just wanted to give my input on this amazing concept/idea/whatever you want to call it. Keep it up man.
thanks Jsmart88.
i'm working on the new stuff so please stay tuned...
