The short name will appear as a label in some ui objects (i.e live.dial), the long name is the parameter name you'll see in live in the parameter automation/modulation of the device.

So, they have nothing to do with script name and pattrstorage right? I did some quick test and it looks like they don't, but just to double check.

That's correct. They belong to the Live parameter system and don't interact with the scripting name.
