spigot~ update?
Hello All!
LONG time Max/MSP/Jitter user and thought I'd pop in to ask about spigot~ again. I've been waiting patiently since QT7 for the ability to access movie audio instead of using a cache'd file. My setup has 4750 videos that are on average 3 to 7 minutes long. First, caching is very impractical for me and it waste's a lot of drive space. Second, the delay on something not being cache'd was always a problem for me.
RIght now, my VJ software does not allow me to work like a traditional DJ system and I'd LOVE to change that. In apps like Serato Scratch, there is no problem doing what I want to do, and it looks like their subsystem is QT as well. Has anyone heard if there is any plans to fix this? I knew that a Jitter rewrite was being talked about around Max 4 timeframe. Or, is there some other way to do this and I just don't know it. I tried EVERY solution I could find during Max4 and none of them worked well. Thanks!
Rick
Okay, well I guess there isn't going to be an update to fix this. Might be time to find another solution, I am really tired of waiting.
Recently tried to use [spigot~] for the first time and yes the caching time was a nightmare to do what I wanted.
On my last video related project, I decided to give up with spigot~ for ever...;-)
The time spigot~ needed to create the cache was about 100 times slower than importing the sound of the video into a buffer!!!
My solution was to import the sound into a buffer and play it together with the video. If importing is too slow, I would save the content of the buffer to an audio file at the same location as the video file (or into an extra folder) and then access it with sfplay. That would speed up successive uses at least, and a performance with known material could be prepared in a batch process...
If you record live video, record visuals and audio separately...
I wonder how others dealt with this problem, I can't imagine that spigot~ is used at all but for the most basic needs and probably only for very small video clips...
Instead of spigot~ I would like to have a jit.vfplay~ object, that works exactly like sfplay (navigation by time, stop the video playback with a stop message, no need for bangs (each frame will carry its own bang) etc.), but has video and audio outlets. In short words, video for audio people.
We think in time not in frames...;-)
