syncing max to an external source.

i'm working on a patch that takes multiple channels of audio from ableton live and applies further effects in max then max outputs the audio. currently both programs are on one computer but since this is for a live performance i plan on using 2 separate computers.
1. ableton live vsts generating 8 stereo outputs, midi control and host clock information to next computer.
2. max as a master effects taking midi from live to add basic control of delay and glitch style effects quantized to ableton clock. including an effects sequencer.

my question is how do i take clock information and sync max as a slave?

obviously rewire~ is out of the question so what else can i do.

the RME madi interfaces have word clock and i have been looking to purchase to ensure sample accurate timing between the 2 programs.
but does max accept slave clock information?

are there ANY workarounds that would make this possible?

Hello Phil,

Word clock and midi clock are separate beasts.

(The word clock is to do with sync-ing the sample clocks in the audio
interfaces, so if you're transferring the audio digitally between the
two computers you'd want to sync the interfaces to avoid audible
artefacts from timing differences. This has nothing to do with max.)

Midi synchronization happens over midi channels. You can use the [sync~]
object in max to take midi clock. If you're using macs, you can do it
over airport as well (with moderate stability), saving the need for
external midi interfaces.

ok so i've been doing research and i'm at least getting that midi timing and word clock are completely different... still trying to create a proper midi clock to use in the patch. to drive any timed events i have. but that i'll push through with the tutorials. thanks owen i originally thought that word clock was just a more accurate version of midiclock.
