Table: Store Values to Domain *Not Range*

I am looking two do the following two things with tables in Max:

1) Output *random* values based on domain (not range) when a table is banged
2) Input lists into tables so that values map to domain (not range)

Does anyone know of a way to reverse this mapping so that I can achieve this? We are looking to do this because we have 7 notes in each *scale*, and we want to generate a composition through a series of tables, a main table (for the performer) for reading and performing.
