Tape Flutter

Jackson's icon

Is anyone out there working with tape emulation in Max5? Im very interested in 70's tape grain/flutter effects but am finding it difficult to replicate anything that doesn't spin out of control into a glitchy mess. Flanging Delays seems to be the first step...
kind regards

Now I may be wrong but isn't tape flutter microtonal frequency modulation... try the freqshift~ object and very small numbers?

freqshift~'s result seemed too AM. The help file led me to fbinshift~ which is less subtle but more along the line of what i'm looking for. Thanks.
I'd love to know if anyone in the forum has been working mostly with cassettes? They have a really nostalgic effect i find which really draws me in.

Modulated delay can work pretty well to create tape effects in real-time. This might help get you started:

Max Patch
Copy patch and select New From Clipboard in Max.

Cheers,
Andrew B.

Cheers

Copy the text, open a new patcher in Max, paste.

Yes very nostalgic indeed. I'm starting up a little recording studio in
september and we've got ourselves a good old 16track studer taperecorder.

If you have Litter Pro you can use lp.frrr~ to do parabolic interpolation between random values. Gives a smoother and more analog-like flutter. It's only a minor edit to Andrew's patch.

I think you may be able to do this with freqshift~ but you have to use very low values. I haven't tried in max but I know it definitely has a similar quality in absynth.

also, check out the allpass mode in biquad/filtercoeff, and make sure you add it to the original signal to get phasing, that can give nice phase cancellations similar to odd tape phasing. Also Phaseshift~ works well for this, again make sure you add to the original signal for cancellations to occur.

You might want to introduce some non-linear compression to the output too.

You feed a distorted version of the signal path into a sidechain of a
compressor.

Can't see a sidechain on any on the Max ones (which would be quite an
ommision for a dynamic processor) so might have to use a VST or
something. P

@ABENSON Your patch sounds awesome! Thank you for sharing!

Hi, I'don't expect a comb filter for wow and flutter, I expect a tremolo + pitch shifting, and not with random values. The comb filter consist in the sum of a direct and a effected signal, that can be heard but it's not electrically created... I have to see further,... but thanx for it!

where the comb object is to small, try teeth as a compromise solution somewhere between comb/allpass and tapout.

indeed @ANDREW BENSON, this sounds really amazing. And so elegantly simple! Sounds fantastic in stereo!!

Thanks!
