I’m pleased to announce the immediate release of rs.delos, a flexible timeline editor and player external for MaxMSP 5.

This looks interesting, and directly useful to a project I’ve had on the backburner for a while – my biggest question is, can you save/load timelines as a file?

Would be nice if there was some sort of demo version to try out, so I can see if I can bend it to my needs before I purchase, too. :D

October 10, 2011 | 1:18 am

Nearly bought it and then noticed times were in milliseconds. Can it work using a bar/beat/tick representation?

October 10, 2011 | 8:36 am

JSON is used to write and read files.

I’ll build a demo version as soon as I’ll find some time.

Concerning bar/beat/tick representation, this is something that is definitely on my todo list.
But I want a system that allows for flexible time signature and tempo changes.
I started working on it but it’s not yet ready, so it did not make it into the initial release.

Thanks for your interest,

Wow, that looks really impressive!

I’m working on a partially similar project for my thesis – but as a standalone/OSC application …

So I’ve got two questions:
1. How long did it take you to write the whole thing ?
2. Is it "scriptable" ? I mean can the gui commands also be invoked by messages to the external? (Looking at the Undo History, the potential seems to be there…)

Thanks in advance!

1. How long did it take you to write the whole thing ?

Years… and it’s not even finished ;-)

2. Is it "scriptable" ?

Yes it is.
You can create and insert events into the timeline as well as modify existing events through Max messages.

I’ll have to make a screencast demonstrating it.

amazing !!

October 10, 2011 | 12:24 pm

there is an other external around, which does nearly the same.
perhapy you should collaborate ;-)

it would be great, if cycling74 would include the detonate external in max6.
now we have rs_delos, note~ and detonate.

I’ve been fortunate enough to be a beta tester for Roby’s rs.delos object, and can say that it is quite amazing. I’ve not yet played with the note~ object referenced above (hope to try it at the Cycling Expo!), but a few nice things about Roby’s are the incredible flexibility for the GUI display, the ability to also embed buffer~’s in the pianoroll (just like any DAW, it can include audio buffers AND note info!!), and cross platform ability. And finally, Roby’s open-ness to suggestions for improvement.

Great job Roby!!

Amen to that!
I’m afraid I was a bit of a lurker on the beta list, but enjoying the ride nonetheless.
Note~ and the new improved detonate look interesting too, but this is the one that’s really caught my eye.

You wait years for a decent timeline for Max to come along…

OK — I just bought it to play with…..looks like fun.

I just uploaded a demo version of rs.delos.

It’s fully functional with the following constraints:
• Maximum number of tracks: 2
• Maximum timeline length: 10 seconds
• Output stops working after 10 minutes

Have fun,

looks interesting, what is the license? (it says you have to read it before you buy it, but I couldn’t find it)

October 11, 2011 | 10:27 pm

clear, thanks (maybe good to add it a link to the word "license" on )

October 11, 2011 | 10:33 pm

works fine here.
what browser / platform are you using?

October 11, 2011 | 10:49 pm

haha, stupid me, I mistakenly thought the button was to buy the thing… and I wanted to click on the word license in the sentence above, sorry,… just don’t expected that kind of button for that, sorry for the noise

No problem Timo, I guess there was a problem with the design of my page.
I changed it and it’s probably clearer now.

Hi Roby,
I’ve download your demo version just to check if it’s suiting my needs.
When I load it, the tools don’t appears in the window and I’ve got those messages in Max Window :

file pointer8.png not found
file cursor_pencil32.png not found
file cursor_scissors.png not found
file cursor_pastetube.png not found
file cursor_zoom.png not found
file cursor_pencilBpf32.png not found
file cursor_selectBpf.png not found
file cursor_arrows_leftright.png not found

I’ve noticed that the "Resources" folder that is supposed to contain those files is not present in the Mac version of the object so I’ve tried to copy it from the windows version with no success.
Any idea ?

More :
I am looking for a timeline to trigger sounds when a movie reaches particular frames.
the movie is readed with a varying speed (it is triggered by a bicycle). so I was wondering if a can play delos with some message like "time $1" rather than just do play and stop.

thank’s for help.

This is great !
Thanks for your work Roby.

I have still the same problem as Fixrobert 7 months ago after downloading the Max6 demo for Mac…

Your post indicates it is only for Max 5, but your website shows it is compatible with Max 6 as well.
Very confusing.

July 30, 2012 | 1:52 pm

I am using Delos in Max6. It works great, love it!

July 30, 2012 | 1:59 pm

I bought it but I was never able to figure out how to use it! The documentation seemed to just define what the pieces were as opposed to how to actually use them. I futzed around with it for a while and then gave up (no time) and was just hoping some beginner tutorials would show up that I could read.

August 5, 2012 | 9:37 am

the problem with the missing image files was a path problem. if you download the demo there is a folder "rs.delos put into Cycling ’74:max-externals", but you don’t have to put this whole folder in your Cycling folder, but only its content

this works: /Applications/Max6/Cycling ’74/3rdparty-externals

this does not work: /Applications/Max6/Cycling ’74/3rdparty-externals/rs.delos put into Cycling ’74:max-externals

August 5, 2012 | 12:09 pm

ok, detonate lost the gui
I am testing the demo is too buggy and unpleasant and restrictive.
the license says no guarantees pay, pay and pay,
introductory price!!!??
Not finished ..
there are things in the list of things to do but "pay" is already solved …

I choose to note ~

August 8, 2012 | 9:43 pm

Hi Roby, play around with delos. Very anazing! What is the easiest or best way to send different tracks to different channels?

August 10, 2012 | 5:25 pm

Excuse my silly question. First parameter of delos output is tracknumber!

October 13, 2012 | 5:00 pm

Hey- great concept- much needed, but I’m having issues getting usable output from it. I’m just using the demo, but sometimes it doesn’t cycle when it is set to, sometimes it misses messages, and the bpf output doesn’t produce reliable results. It seems like the first two issues happen when there’s something else going on in Max, like a message box moving. Maybe it has to do with the transport missing a specific time or something?
The bpf output sometimes kicks out time x coordinates based on the absolute time of the transport, sometimes between 0 and around 100 (but not always), even when the event is much longer. This isn’t affected by changing absolute vs relative bpf time.

I’d love to use this external for a number of applications, but I don’t think I can at this point. Any suggestions?
