another kinect to max problem

gantzgraf's icon

Hello,

please help me. The max window said that the devive is not connected (see error description in the attachement). and i get no picture into the window

i´m on win 7, max 6, kinect xbox360 and would like to use the openni external. I installed the needed drivers yet. The drivers are working correctly, as i tested them with the openni viewer. There i see the picture.

When i want to read the jit.config xml i got a message in max that the initialization failed.

If someone has any idea´s to fix my problems please reply.

thx alex

If you are on windows then I think that dp.kinect is what you want http://hidale.com/dp-kinect/

Saying that, if you have recently changed machines then a reinstall of the drivers may be necessary anyway. I had the same messages after changing mac with jit.openni

Which specific drivers did you install and where? I'm having the utmost trouble getting Synapse to open because openni.dll is apparently missing.. However the viewers work so I don't understand. I'm also on Win 7 is yours 32 or 64?

Thank you guys,

i fixed the problem. You both have right. I reinstalled drivers. I also have MS SDK installed, and i think the drivers haven´t tolerate each other.

@whorl: i haven´t tried dp-kinect yet. is it a better version for window. do i have issues again with both?

thanks whorl and manleymooseman

If you are on Windows, I highly recommend using dp.kinect http://hidale.com/dp-kinect/
It is faster, more features, more stable, better supported, everything better.

Like any piece of hardware, there can be *only one* Kinect hardware driver installed. Microsoft's official driver and OpenNI's hacked driver cannot be both installed.

I caution you that OpenNI is dead. Next month, the OpenNI website is closing. When this happens, there may be no legal place to download NITE (the essential component of OpenNI that does skeletal tracking). This could lead to software piracy and illegal distribution. NiMATE, jit.openni, Synapse...they all use OpenNI.

What are OS X users supposed to use going forward instead of OpenNI?

I don't have any good Osx recommendation at this time. OpenNI, Primesense, and Apple (the new owners of the underlying technology) have unfortunately abandoned their current customers.

thank´s for the Info Diablodale. I will give it a try. I´m just a little bit arguable to set it up.

@diablodale : yeah, it was a kind of easiness to switch to dp.kinect....and you are right when you say it has a lot of more features.

One more question: what happens after the expiration date. Am i still able to use it? I´m still working on my degree project at university till july and won´t switch during working progress.

Synapse is load-and-go for OSX.

synapse seems to have some defaults... like, only one skeleton, the need to stay in T pos

@gantygraf, the registration key is separate from dp.kinect. It is the key that would expire. Therefore, by getting a new key, you can easily re-register using the register message as seen in the demo patcher. I include updated registration keys on a regular basis in the ZIP file during the beta. Eventually, I will separate it from the ZIP download when it moves out of beta.
