I think [table] is good for this as it outputs a random number from the contents on receiving a bang. Have a look on the patch below where you can create a scale using the [kslider] object. I hope it helps.

in the examples overview in extras, theres a nifty patch under "max" called scaler. this does what you're looking for

am i missing something here? why would you have an audio output when/if its a midi device??? bit confused there, any pointers?
