controlling Reason sequencer from max with Rewire

Hi,

I want to try experimenting with controlling Reason with MaxMsp with
Rewire.
I have opened the first Hostsync Patch 1 from the first MaxMsp Rewire tutorial.
Then I open Reason, but it doesnt seem to recognize Max as Rewire Host.
Ive chosen Ad Rewire in Max preferences.

The ability to control Reason this way must be incredible for Autechre/IDM stuff !

What to do to get this work ?

Cheers

Not sure about how to link max to reason, but I had the same problem trying to control Reaktor 5 with Max. I downloaded midi yoke which enables one software application to speak to another software application with virtual midi cables. It worked seamlesly. I didn't even have to set anything up in max preferences or reaktor preferences.

and it's free

Hey,
I've read all thes things carefully but when I open Reason it dosent work. Reason is in Rewire slave mode but when I go to the preferences menu I do not can change MIDI IN on bus A-B-C-D to MaxMSP1. I just have "no midi input" in the list.

Any idea?

Thanks,

Wallace.

Open the MIDI Setup... window and make sure "from Max MSP 1" is checked. It should then be available in Reason.

By the way, MIDIyoke is really not necessary with Max. MIDIyoke is just a virtual MIDI connection between software, but Max makes its own virtual MIDI ports. That's what the "to Max MSP 1" and "from Max MSP 1" are. And of course, any processing that MIDIyoke might do can be done with Max anyway.

Hi,
Thanks you for your quick answers!
Here is a screen shot from what I see in Max when Reason is in Rewire Mode. There is no port in MIDI status to be checked or so.

I tried to update Rewire but I haven't got any changes.

If you see something on the screen which can be wrong...we never know.

Thanks a lot,

Are you on Windows? After reading the "Messages to Max" section of the docs, I'm wondering if Max's virtual ports are available on Windows. It says you can't generate new ones, though I didn't see anywhere about the default ones not existing in the first place.

Ideally, though, you shouldn't need them. ReWire has something like 256 channels of MIDI anyway, so going through the rewire~ objects should work. Admittedly, I've never really gotten it working properly myself. Setting up "from Max/MSP" in Reason's MIDI ports is really more of a workaround.
